DVD Recording Quandry. LG RHT498H

Howdy folks, first time poster - please go gently.

I've got a SKY+ box with lots of lovely programmes that i want to keep forever. So, i decided that a DVD Recorder was the answer, and off i went to the shops. £200 odd later, and i'm the proud owner of a LG RHT498H. It's pretty dandy, so i'm happy... except the 'dubbing'.

The box, she say it goes at 130x speed when dubbing, but I can't work it out. The instruction book looks like it was written by a lunatic, so i'm beseeching the masses. Having just spent several hours copying from my SKY+ box to the HDD on my swanky new unit, it'd be a shame to throw it out of a window.

So, in brief: How in hades do i do proper 'high speed' dubbing?

My thanks in advance for your assistance!

Adam

Edit: I should mention, that i HAVE managed to get to to record... just in real time. Which is almost suicidally slow, and very, very dull to watch take place. Hence the high-speed is so wished for.

you will NOT get high speed dubbing from a sky box to a dvd/hdd recorder

the best you can achieve is real time copying , using a scart lead from sky box to recorder

so 1 to 1 real time recording is all you can do , like you already have done

any high speed dubbing will be from the recorders internal hdd to its own dvd drive

Re your Edit - Why do you have to watch the recording take place? If you mean that literally, then you certainly don't need the TV switched on. If you have the recorder connected to an aerial, you could watch Freeview while recording from the Sky+ box; or do the recording overnight; or while you're at work. (If you're recording to individual DVDs, you'd find it far more convenient to record to (& edit on) the hard disc, & then high speed dub to DVDs.)

Thanks for your posts and advice guys, I appreciate you taking the time out. I guess i didn't make myself clear though.

I've copied the programmes to my HDD on the new DVDrecorder, and now i want to high-speed dub them. The problem is, i can't work it out

Boy, oh boy do i feel stupid right now.

I dont have the lg , but on most recorders including mine you have to make sure that the format used when recording can actually be used in a fast dub to a disk , so its important to set the recording mode up on the dvd recorder BEFORE MAKING A RECORDING

this is usually something like SP mode

sp mode will allow up to 2 hours 5 minutes on a standard single layer dvd disk

the next task would be to ensure you have not exceeeded the time allowed for this disk , so no more than say 2 hours in SP mode for instance

editing or dividing can reduce the recordings to below the maximum you have set

so for example , a film lasting 105 minutes recorded in SP MODE on the recorder hdd will fit on the single layer disk as the disk can accept up to about 125 minutes in this sp mode

then if fastdub is available in the dubbing settings , you would use this to dub to the disk

usually a dvd recorder will dub at a maximum speed of say x6 or maybe x4 , assuming the disk can handle that speed

so a fastdub will take perhaps 15 to 20 minutes for a full disk

once done , the disk should be finalised to allow greater compatibility , and in general -R single layer verbatim disks or similar should be used

I hope you can pick out what is needed for the LG from the above generalities

Fast Dub on my LG DVD recorder normally takes just over five minutes (but a lot less than ten minutes) to archive a full disc's worth of material.

and my opening statement did actually say I dont have an LG

the reply I gave was generalities and based upon my sony/pioneer recorder , perhaps as you have the LG you could give him a more detailed and longer reply than mine based on actual specifics ?

If I was at home and had the LG DVDR to hand I would. If nobody else has been able to help before I get home and find the instruction manual, I'll reply later. I've not got the same DVDR as the OP, but as I said it is an LG with fast dub option.

Well, thanks for the feedback and advice guys - I appreciate you both taking the time. Much of what you said was helpful, which is nice.

I ended up talking on the phone to a very nice girl from LG, who finally helped me out.

Apparently you can't fast record/high speed dub something that has been edited - and combining recordings counts as editing. Weird eh? She also recommended a different type of disk, which has paid dividends too.

Now i am recording merrily, so thank you very much for your time and efforts.

Case closed.

Adam

One question - I'm very intrigued - how did you copy the contents of your sky box hard disk to your new lg hard disk?! Please let us in on the secret!

Welcome to the forum.

Connect the devices by scart, play Sky+, press record on DVDR.

Yes, exactly what GavTech said. To record to the hard disk, however you MUST do it in real time. I tend to set it all to record over night, which works marvelously.

Just select the programmes you want in your SKY+ planner and set the to 'copy'. Next, press record on your DVD/HD recorder and the magic should happen.

That's impressive! Thanks! I am surprised as I thought hard disk recorders could never record from other external sources, only from the freeview channels built in through the tuner(s).

Your original surmise is correct in some respects.

Hard disc recorders - if they are of the PVR class of machines - cannot record from an external source.

There is a fundamental technical diffrence between PVR's and DVDR's in that DVDR's are equipped with an digital encoder.

It is this difference that makes it possible for DVDR's to record from any analogue video source.

So the digital encoder in the DVDR means you can record from any external source to a dvd OR TO THE HARD DRIVE? I see the difference. That's a bonus, and great. Thanks.

Yes.

Always preferable to record to hard drive first in any case - to permit editing before copying to DVD.
