Panasonic DMR-E85H DVD-R finalize problem 4.3 ratio

Hi,
Why will my Panasonic DVD recorder not record to DVD-R discs and finalize the discs so that the TV recognises them as 16.9 aspect ratio.

The discs play back anamorphically stretched ( vertical elongation ) with black bars left and right. I have to force the TV to 16.9.

HDD recordings and DVD-RAM discs tell the TV I have recorded a 16.9 disc.
On my laptop the disc properties show 4.3 aspect ratio recording and some limited feature DVD media software players don't have facilities to change the aspect ratio.

I want to record a few discs for a friend who has a 4.3 screen laptop and a vanilla ( bog standard) DVD software player.

Thanks IA. Thomas

DVD-R recording is always restricted to 4:3 on this machine.

I presume you must be high speed copying to get this result.

I dare say if you real-time copy it will display in the correct ratio.

Thanks for the reply Gavtech.

No I recorded real-time from a SKY+ box.

I haven't used the recorder for ages and then I mostly used RAM discs.
I'm pretty sure though that I previousy did record to DVD-R without this issue.
I have only just up-graded the recorder's OS to take X16 discs and this is the first time I have used it since to make a DVD-R recording.
I subsequently checked to see if RAM discs were OK and they were.
Panasonic tech team referred me to a page ( 16) in the manual showing that 16.9 is only recorded on RAM and said that it was the DVD-R discs themselves that didn't allow recording to the WS format.
The DVD-R recording can be viewed OK by using the TV's own aspect ratio options, but if the recording was played back via HDMI on another machine I guess it would be stuck on 4.3 stretched vertically?

I just wondered if this is a general problem with DVD-R format or just peculiar to Panasonic, and if just Panasonic, why.
Thanks, Thomas

Hi,

My DMRES20D, which I think is of the same vintage as your E85, has only ever recorded the widescreen signal on RAM discs. With –R and –RW it has always lost the widescreen signal. It is even in the instructions that it will not record the signal. I thought this was the way Panasonic felt was the only way properly to meet the specification, although they have relented more recently.
