Recording from a freesat TV

Hello,
I'm in the market to buy a 42" HD TV.
In looking I have noticed a couple of freesat TVs in my price bracket.
I Have at the moment a Panasonic DVD/HD recorder as my recording device.
My questions are; are you able to record from a freesat TV to a panasonic EX769 recorder? Also will you be able to record a freesat program while watching another?

Thank you.

yes you can record to a dvd recorder , but its in composite only and you have to leave the tv on the freesat channel being recorded , so no you cannot watch a different channel afaik

In addition to the points Ramjet made, bear in mind that the most convenient method of recording Freesat (& to watch one/record another) - especially in HD - is with a Freesat PVR, like the Humax Foxsat - but for full functionality this needs two feeds from the dish. To operate the Freesat tuner in the TV would require an additional feed, so you may wish to take into account how many feeds you currently have.

Does this mean that you don't need a Freesat TV and it's just as good to buy Freesat separately?

Not sure what you mean about additional feeds?
Not sure how many addition feeds I have.

If I bought a freesat PVR would this make my Panasonic DVD/HD recorder redundant?

Thank you.

not really a subject for this forum but here goes

freesat comes from a dish pointed at astra 2 at 28.2 and eurobird at 28.5 east

this is typically a sky dish

the sky dish can have an lnb with a single output and single cable feeding a single box

but they fit quad output lnb,s when 2 or up to 4 outputs are required for sky plus and other boxes

so if you have a tv wanting 1 or 2 feeds you would have a sky dish with a quad output lnb and one or more cables from it

so if you buy a freesat pvr you need 1 or 2 cables from say a quad lnb , depending how many feeds you need

and a freesat tv will require 1 or 2 feeds as well

so if you have a freesat tv and a freesat pvr or recorder you will require a sky dish with up to 4 feeds from a quad output lnb

so a quad output lnb can feed a freesat tv with twin tuners and a freesat recorder or pvr with twin tuners , and any combination thereof with up to 4 feeds being used , or up to 8 using an octo lnb with up to 8 cables from the sky dish

so depends how many feeds you need as to the equipment being used

Thanks ramjet for a detailed reply.
Just a couple more things and that is; does it mean if you need 4 cables, that is 4 cable going to your TV and equipment?
And the other thing is how does this effect my Panasonic DVD/HD recorder? As this is fairy new I would hate to find it redundant.

Cheers.

1 cable for each feed , so up to 4 cables depending on boxes and tv,s

so say 1 for the tv and 2 for the pvr making 3 in total which was what geoffbob was suggesting

your recorder can record from its internal tuners or an external box , and is also used for dvd watching and dvd archiving

its your job to do the pick and mix from what is on offer , and buy what suits you

In my opinion. yes.

Not sure what you mean about additional feeds?
Not sure how many addition feeds I have.

Obviously, without visiting your home, I can't say whether you have a single LNB, a twin LNB, or a quadruple LNB. In fact from your original post I don't know if you have a satellite dish at all. What I am saying is that to run a Freesat PVR & a Freesat TV fully, you will need a quadruple LNB, & 3 feeds from it.

If I bought a freesat PVR would this make my Panasonic DVD/HD recorder redundant?

No, you could use it to archive recordings from the PVR to individual DVD discs, but not in HD.
