MKV or VOB?

I have just taken delivery of a shiny new Drobo RAID storage system and hard disk space is no longer a concern to me.

I have a LOT of DVDs that I am keen to store on the Drobo and watch via Plex on my Mac.

As space is not really an issue - what is the best format to rip my collection to? Is there any advantage of MKV over VOB?

Thanks,

FieldDoc

Strictly speaking, this issue cannot be discussed on the forum due to the forum rules - since it is not a legitimate activity.

However you have not said these are commercial DVD's - [and will be wise not to ].

MKV and VOB are not actually video files but are container formats.... so more importantly it depends what you put in them.

When you take video files off a DVD they are in MPEG2 form - so it makes sense to keep them in that form because further conversion [ say to MPEG4 ] will mean additional loss and will mean additional and very lengthy handling and processing.

As MKV or VOBs can hold MPEG2 files - its up to you.. but since you get VOB's directly, you may as well stick with them.
