Hi,

I'd like to buy a DVD recorder for Xmas.

Here is what i'm lookin for:
- outstanding playback (because at the end of the day thta's what important with dvd)
- compatible with as many formats as possible (CD-R, DVD-R...)
- can read MP3, VCD, SVCD
- has good connections (digital output, RGB, Svideo)
- has iLink to connect to camcorder...

Could you advise me on the best match for my requirements?

The Philips DVDR75 will fit your bill very well it's a + format recorder which gives a simple mode of operation.

There will be a load of - format users all talking about Panasonics etc. They are good machines as well.

Cant argue with the above post - lets face it they all do the same job!! All I would add is it comes down to personal preference of the format to go for, which only you can decide with the help of the plus or dash sticky at the top of the forum.

If you want to record on a disc,lend it out or watch it in another player,then rerecord on it,go for DVD+.Otherwise a Panasonic offers superior features.

Don't forget the Sony GX7. This offers the best DVD playback of ANY current DVD recorder as well as the ability to record to DVD-RW, DVD-R (the most compatible DVD format) and DVD+RW. It also has iLink, RGB in/out (or option of component out), CD-R/-RW compatibility etc. It also allows you to do editting of recordings etc (in VR mode).

Not sure - it has CD-R and CD-RW playback from VCD and CD-DA but I'm not certain about MP3 or SVCD. Check out the Sony website.

Just checked and the Sony doesn't read MP3s.

I have a JVC DR-M1. Supports DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM. Found it easy to use and has PAL progressive output, along with a host of other features.

Well pleased with it......Done several recordings, all of which have played without fault on friends/families various machines.....
