Pioneer 540 Drive Failure - Sony 870 A Good Replacement?

Hi

My (secondary) Pioneer DVR 540HX HDD/DVD recorder has developed a fault, I went to use the DVD drive the other day only for it to eject the disc saying that it was unreadable, I've tried using a lens cleaner but still get the message. If it proves too costly to get it fixed would the Sony 870 be a good replacement? I have an old Sony HDD/DVD recorder which I don't like as it doesn't allow editing while recording/dubbing, do the newer models allow this?

Thanks

John
