Pixellated DVD playback

A friends DVD player will only play back in an extremely pixellated form. Does he need a new player or could something simple be causing this? Any help would be much appreciated.

Possibilities may be:

the type of cable used (I have seen widely-varying output with different cables on my own equipment);
age of the player (failing or dirty hardware);
dirty disc...

Could be one of these

Cheapo DVD player
Dirty lens
Dirty disc
Incompatible with your DVD firmware (Disney DVD etc)
Disc rot

My mate tried the above suggestions but to no avail. One thing he did say was when the player is first switched on the screen is black with white flecks instead of the usual blue. When the film plays, the picture is unwatchable and there is no sound. And the make is Bush - it's about 18 months old. Anyway thanks to you all for your ideas. Regards, Paul.
