New UK Panasonic BD players & recorders announced in Amsterdam (Post 30 full details)

No price or spec as yet, but two new 'Blu-ray Disc Recorder' products have appeared today on Panasonic's dealer site. The model numbers are:

DMR-BS750
DMR-BS850

Will be interesting to find out exactly what these are. Also listed are three new players:

DMP-B15
DMP-BD60
DMP-BD80

Further details when they arise.

I read a while ago that Panasonic were looking at Freesat with regards to their Blu-ray recorders in the UK. Considering the relationship they already have with it being into some of their tv's I would assume thats the case.

Purely a speculation - but the S in the model numbers may be indicative of a Freesat tuner; Digital Media Recorder Bluray Sat

Have a look at this I think some of the newer models in the UK will be capable of recording to Blu-ray discs:

Blu-ray Disc Recorder with 500GB HDD & Twin HD Tuner [DMR-BW500] - Panasonic Australia

Yeh, if it comes to the UK with a Freesat tuner and this spec. it will be well nigh perfect (apart from no HDMI 'In' socket of course - which we obviously can't expect, unfortunately.)
I'm salivating..

I had already removed the 'EBK' that is tagged onto the end of the part numbers which designates UK spec models in black. Silver models would end 'EBS'.

Full model no: DMR-BS750EBK etc.

Oh, really? Bum.

Would it be possible to loop the satellite input (or even two satellite inputs) through the Blu-Ray recorder and then to a Sky HD box?

Joe.

No you can't loop satellite inputs through in the same way as an standard aerial.

Your SKY HD box will have inputs from a dual LNB (if you have PVR facilities) on the satellite dish.

To feed a DVB-S2 tuner on a Blu-Ray Recorder as well as a SKY HD system you will require as many LNB feeds as receivers. That is of course assuming the FreeSat signal is in the same area as SKY HD.

Of course these recorders will NOT record from the SKY HD system.

Hope that helps.

Re: 2009 UK Panasonic Blu-ray recorder

Can't wait to see the price on these puppies.

That Australian model (A$ 2200) comes in at about a grand on current exchange rates.

You're going to have to seriously want Blu-ray archiving for that sort of money. The extra over a two box player/PVR combo will buy a lot of "Lark Rise to Candleford" box sets.

Sky HD and Freesat are both transmitted from 28Deg E, so a normal 4 output LNB feed from a Sky dish will be fine. ( 2 for Sky, 2 for the Panasonic.) Not much use if it won't record Freesat tho .. it must do !! No mention of a Freeview tuner (DVB-T) however, on that DVB site.

Have to remember that there is FreeSat from Sky and FreeSat (from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4...). I would expect it to record the normal FreeSat as some Panasonic TV's have but in tuners, but not the system from Sky.....

You would need a Quad feed LNB on the dish and 4 cables from it.....

Yeh, a quad LNB is what Sky fit for a normal HD service - quite convenient, I thought !

Trouble is, I'm already using all 4 inputs for the Sky HD box downstairs and the Sky+ box in the bedroom. Even if it's possible to upgrade the LNB, the thought of running yet more cables from the dish doesn't appeal.

Would it be feasible to use some kind of switch box to toggle the satellite feed between a Blu-Ray recorder and Sky?

Joe.

If it was me, I would simply put a second dish up - they are cheap enough. Then you'll have an independant Freesat system.

I already have a second dish for foreign channels. Three might be pushing it.

Re: 2009 UK Panasonic Blu-ray recorder

I suspect that the recordings may be "crippled" in some way so that if you want the perfect version you'll have to buy the Blu-Ray DVD instead.
Also, I really don't fancy having all my recordings with DOGs on them

Trouble is a lot of HD stuff never makes it to BD, unfortunately.
I'm still waiting for 'Titanic' and 'The Concert for George' to be released on BD. Yawn..
Let alone that Joanna Lumley Northern Lights prog..
(As an aside, the Concert for George has been shown on the Sky Arts HD channnel, but not in HD, even though it was originally filmed with HD cameras - go figure..)

The broadcast HD version is always going to be "crippled" compared to the Blu-ray version (if it exists).

1080i rather than 1080p, lower bit rate with probable visible compression artifacts and a standard Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack at best.

That may be enough, you pays your money and makes your choice. But if the Blu-ray don't exist you don't get a choice.

Re: 2009 UK Panasonic Blu-ray recorder

I for one don't fancy paying £8 a time for blank DVDs only to get a recording that's not really the best. I'm OK with DVDs costing 20 pence each and giving the quality that we get now, but I really can't see the point in spending that much on having a hard copy of something that isn't top notch.

You can buy a blank single layer BD-R for 6 quid but the point remains valid.

But will the machine let you burn AVCHD discs using standard DVD media?
