DVD player with USB that will play .avi and MP4

I have an archos 160g 705 wifi. The video section is all full now so i need to transfer all the material onto an external hard drive. Can anyone tell me if this is an easy job to do and also if anyone can suggest an external hard drive that will do the job easily. Another question is how would i play the recorded stuff from a hard drive straight onto my 42' tv screen? Do i need to buy a dvd player with a USB port in?
The video on the archos are in .avi format (recorded from the tv and old vhs tapes) and some are in MP4 format.
Any suggestions or comments would be very welcome.
