I have a US (region A) PS3. I was wondering if the upscaling of standard DVD on a 42" screen would be noticeably better with the Sony 550 (region B not region modified for DVD) or investing in something like the Oppo 980?

The Oppo would do the best job out of the lot.

Oppo hands down would be the best bet. The ps3 is very poor as a dvd upscaler IMHO. I tried it on my old 40 inch Bravia and my 428xd and it was poor on both displays.
