I think wireless is a must for Blu-ray players if the BD Live features are going to grow in the future.

Expecting the average consumer to run an ethernet cable to their Blu-ray player to access internet content just isn't going to happen.

Incorporating wireless into stand alone players can only be good for BD Live.

Slightly off topic here but Manufacturers are looking to incorporate wireless technology for both audio and video in their new displays. Panasonic in particular. One wire free display wall mounted or on a av stand with a wire free decoder placed at a maximum distance of 10m away. Wireless seems to be the way of the future

Are there horror stories from people downloading firmware wirelessly? Like Kingfats I always downloaded to the PS3 wirelessly and had no problems. I'm no expert on these things but you would think that manufacturers would be able to put safeguards in place to make sure that the file is downloaded complete before installing and to not run the file if the connection fails.

Perhaps it's not as easy as that?

I'm happy with wireless, I think the problems occur with firmwares downloads in general by those who don't know what they are doing rather than wireless issues. You see how reliable wirreless is re internet and does that crass your pc?

is it the DL that would be the problem.
I would have thought if the file being DL was interupted it wouldnt be an issue as its only a file with no recognition at this point.
Now when its being installed is a different matter but the file is downloaded by this time.

I thought thats how the PS3 did it anyway, DLs then installs

The question I've asked myself time and again is, why hasn't anyone made the wifi enabled Bu-ray player available till now? The PS3 has been available since 2006/2007 and has always performed well for me over wifi.
The only peep I heard about wifi Blu-ray from CES 2009 was from LG with their BD390. I know all the big players are talking about wifi dongles on their TV's, but since the PS3 has been available for such a long time with wifi, why has no one else jumped on that bandwagon for their spinners?
Is it cost? I mean, if we keep it in the realms of Sony, since when have they worried about cost? Their TV's often cost more than the next leading brand, their Blu-ray players often cost more than the next leading brand, especially their higher end models, and the PS3 started life at £425 and is being made at a loss. So, as you probably know, Sony do not consider the cost of a product to be a problem as they know people will buy almost anything that has their name on it. Somehow they balance their books and stay afloat. So what has taken them two years to put wifi into a Bu-ray player? What has taken any manufacturer to put wifi into a standalone? It's always puzzled me.

Wii, PS3, Denon Amp, Laptops ... all updating via WiFi ...never a problem.
I think every single new piece of electronic should have WiFi built in as standard where connectivity is needed or useful.

There wont be a problem updating firmware via wireless as the updates don't begin until the data has been fully received (i.e stored first) and then verified by the equipment.

Stored within the embedded solid state memory on the chipset, flash memory, EEPROM etc. If for big downloads such as the PS3 updates then the Hard Drive could even be used.

Either way the concern should not really be the download itself, but worse the issue of a power failure or interuption once its actually started unpacking and applying the update.

the firmware for typical Sony standalones are 50Gb, more features on new players will add to this size, you will need a hard drive in these players which they don't have. The chipsets certainly don't have that capacity to store the download, which is why they have the issue with power failure. If it was just on a hard drive then no bother like any pc.

50Mb is easy in Fixed chipset memory. Also downloads in seconds.

50GB is a full blu-ray disc. Current films don't even get to that level. A CD can only fit 700mb. A DVD 4GB. Must be a mistake surely.

I thought the power failure issue was because they use volatile memory, i.e only retains data whilst power is on?. A bit like PC ram for example, as opposed to hard drive?

sorry yes typo, very late at night. 50Mb still very large and as experience shows these don't download / update in seconds but quite a few minutes, or in some cases even hrs depending on player / connection. The power on issues is becasue they can't store these permanenty (say on hard drive or the volatile memory) whilst doing the update and therefore may 'stop' when only partly complete hence my question on where they could store this stuff. If the chip could store the update permanently like the operating firmware (old and new versions) then recovery from failure could be possible with an inbuilt 'roll back position' but I have not seen this on any of these firmwares probably because of permanent memory limitations. As it stands now the LAN update proceedure will likely be the same as the wireless one for the players, with just the interface being different. The PS3 however is different and that actually permanent stores the new firmware on the hard drive and verifies before update.

as I said earlier I have no worries or problems about wireless updates, no more than say any internet connection. This is just an interface to get the data to the player. Personally I use CDs or memory sticks, because they are permanent and because they are just more convenient. Flashing of memory has always been a hair of the seat experiemce but as any Tag owner will tell you one that needed doiung very regularly in the past.
