Sony bdps550 blu-ray

Hi everyone

I currently have a 5.1 reciever/amp that only decodes dd &dts 5.1, and i was thinking of buying the SONY BDPS550 BLU-RAY player .

I heard that this player decodes dd true hd &dts master hd and has analog outputs, so if i connected this to my reciever via the analog outputs would i be able to hear dd true hd & dts master hd thru my speakers as the player would be doing the decoding.

ps. sorry if im being stupid but im not very good at this stuff

thanks in advance

The player can send TrueHD/DTS-MA over the Multi-analogues.
All the best.

Re: Sony bdps550 blu-ray

not really but the end result will be the same however, probably not worth considering in your set up as your speakers will not be dealing with too much of the lfe channel anyway.

Yes in a 7.1 setup if you 5.1 only use surround not rears (backs)

Re: Sony bdps550 blu-ray

hi again
just changed my mind and baught the samsung bd-p2500 , so this should do the same job with the analogue outputs.
however i was just wondering can this player decode the hd audio and send it through the optical as this might be easier for me but i heard somewhere that it will reduce the hd to just normal dd & dts if i connect with the optical.

thanks in advance, this site rocks

Optical cannot support HD audio not enough bandwidth i'm afraid.
But,use optical out and choose Bitstream Re-encode the Samsung will re-encode "all" HD soundtracks to max bitrate DTS that's pretty cool.

Re: Sony bdps550 blu-ray

depends on the quality of your kit. I like the optical feeding the better DACs of my processors personally.

Optical will give you excellent results plus just one cable and no worries over bass management either which can be hard to get right with the analogues......sometimes.
Cheers.

Re: Sony bdps550 blu-ray

can you explain a bit more about base management as i have tried with optical and analoge outputs.
the analoge seems much better however when there is lots of base with the analoge"ie explosions" my speakers crackle like hell,
i take it this is due to the base management ?
how can i sort this if possible ?

They shouldn't crackle/distort like that but with optical it's fine right?
Good post here from Nic on bass management and the analogues.

ok sorted
i changed the output to bitstream audiophile and the crackling is gone,
but this confuses me as the handbook says this setting is so your reciever can decode the audio , but mine doesent decode dd hd or dts hd

Bitstream audiophile will send DD/DTS for TrueHD/DTS-MA over the optical, not sure why that setting would affect the analogues though?
Oh well,at least it fixed the speaker issue.

Re: Sony bdps550 blu-ray

gets better
just changed it back to pcm and its ok

think there is someting up with the player "see my other thread about speakers working then not working when i turn the player on off"
just turned the player to pcm then turned the player off/on and everything ok
then turned the player off/on and back to crackling, everytime i turn it off/on seems to be a hit or miss, wish i had just stuck to my guns and got the sony

perhaps next week when i can get a new 7.1 hdmi amp all my problems will be solved
