hello there, i have a pioneer 507xde plasma , a ps3, a tosh ep35 hd dvd player , pioneer high end dvd player and the sonystr2400es amp , all the players are going through the sony amp via hdmi and the amp output to the plasma is via hdmi.
i have tried all the players with dvd,s to see the differance that upscaling makes and i can see no differance ( i,m not a novice to home cinema ) and have tried varying variations of settings from dvd , ps3 and hd dvd player...there seems to be no differance at all which i find strange as there are many comments in the forums praising the upscaling of the ep35 especially.
any ideas what the problem could be...thanks in advance...steve

If you play a DVD without upscaling then your TV will upscale anyway. Some older TVs were very poor at this.

These days you often find the TV does a good job. The differences can be quite small and are not really noticable whilst watching (enjoying) a movie. Don't start really analysing the picture because once you notice an artifact you can't STOP noticing them!

If you are happy with your picture then there is NO problem!

Remember, upscaling doesn't add any quality - the difference is how well it stretches the picture to fill your screen compared to the job your TV manages.

You should be able to see the difference between a DVD and a Bluray/HDDVD though.

i think the problem is that the dvd player i have is one of the top end pioneer,s and bacause the picture is so good anyway there is hardly any differance if any ?? , and i think because reading forum members threads there are many that do show a huge differance , you always expect to see one yourself.

the 3 dvd players you mentioned are all pretty well regarded for their upscaling abilitys. so you not seeing a difference may be related to that. if you were to go buy a cheap £30 dvd plyaer in tesco or something like that you may see the difference you are expecting to see.

The issue may be due to the native resolution of your 507XDE and the fact that non of the players will scale to its native resolution. The end result is standard output resolution such as 1080 (1920x1080) or 720 (1280x720) is further scaled by the display to 1366x768. This process may render the any differences in the players scaling capability moot. What it won't do is mask deinterlacing issues if you know what you're looking for.

You should notice a difference with Blu-ray image partly due to the increased native resolution and more importantly much better compression.

Absolutely agree with this.
My situation is very similar to the OP.
I use a Pioneer 427 which scales every input to 1024x768.
Fortunately its scaling ability is superb.
This is the reason I send 480P via component from an old Denon 2900 and still to this day have not found a single player that does a better job with this screen. Many can look 'as good' but I feel I have reached the absolute limit of what the screen is capable of (With SD) and I'm extremely happy with it
Although the Denon clearly deinterlaces better than the Pioneer.
Basically because as long as the player performs the basic functions correctly, EVERY source will still need to be scaled by the screen.
This is the reason the OP is not seeing any difference.
