Best Res to run a SD DVD from an Upscaling DVD to HDTV

Hey there peeps -
Basically I have updated all my kit recently - I now have a Toshiba 37XV555DB Full HD TV. And I run a Toshiba HD/DVD Recorder as my DVD player through my Yamaha RXV363 AV Amp as HDMi.

The DVD unit can upscale to 1080i and I really want to get the best image I can out of it. Would it be better to run the upscaler at 1080i or at 720p - I know that HDTVs are inherently progressive so a 720p upscaled image may look better that a de-interlaced 1080i Image.

Is there any maths behined this? Or is it better to just set it to 1080i and leave it. Totally new to this so trying to get my head round it!!

Set what looks best to your eyes I suppose although would say give 1080i a try should be your best bet
