Unhappy VGA output issues with a small chinese player

Hi all, I recently purchased a very small no name DVD player on e-bay that states on the box that it can play multiregional discs. The unit offers standard audio video output signal and also VGA output. However, when attempting to play Region 2 DVDs using the VGA output, there is no picture when the unit is connected via the VGA out to a computer screen. The following message displays on the screen: OUT OF RANGE H: 15.6 K V 49.9.
When the unit is hooked up to a digital projector via the VGA output, the resulting picture is in black & white only. The player works fine on a TV screen or when I connect it to the projector via the RCA cables. The unit did show visual display on the computer monitor whan a DVD having no indication of regionality was played. I also note from the manual (page 4): "The region number of this unit is 3." Could this explain its failure with VGA output for my region 2 discs? Is there any way of overcoming this?

Many thanks in advance.

Re: VGA output issues with a small chinese player

Hi,

Welcome to the forums.

The monitor is telling you that the scan rate on the vga output is only 15.6 Khz and 50Hz. This isn't any different from the standard video rates that you'd get from a rgb scart output. While some projectors can accept a video scan rate on a vga input most computer monitors won't handle a signal at that low rate.

Look to see if there is an option for a 'deinterlaced' or 'upscaled' output from the vga output and turn that on.

A few years ago there were a couple of rare players that had vga outputs (e.g. Skyworth, Momitsu) but it isn't "allowed" as part of the dvd specification. These players have been replaced by upscaling players with HDMI outputs.

As you've suggested your problem may be one of region coding so you might want to look at the manufacturers web site or do a google search on your player.

Brian, Thank you very much for that helpful response. I'll give a second look for interlacing but I do not think that is an option.

Re: VGA output issues with a small chinese player

Some dvd players I think need to be set to ntsc progressive only for VGA output so if you get an option for ntsc, pal or auto select ntsc only and if you get an option for interlace or progressive select progressive.
