Black and white picture only

Just connected my dvd player (Pioneer XV DV55) to my new tv (Samsung LE37R87BD) and i only get black and white picture from the dvd, tv is fine, all the cables/leads are in same positions as with old tv, and i only have the dvd player and sky box connected. i have searched various forums and it seems i should be checking the AV input output to make sure it is RGB, but i can't find any settings in either tv or dvd menue to check what it is, does anyone have any ideas please.

Re: Black and white picture only

How are they connected - HDMI or Scart (or something else) ?

You are correct that a video out setting on the player or a video in setting on the TV are most likely the problem.

assuming your using Scart:

Can you check in the manual for the TV that the tv can accept an RGB signal in both Scarts sockets your using ?

I would then look at the DVD player and try and find a display/video out setting in the setup menu which can be set to either video, Svideo or RGB (again assuming Scart is the connection method).

Video is low quality, Svideo is better and RGB is best. Usually Svideo or RGB would be the 2 options to try.

If your using HDMI non of the above applies - let us know.

Re: Black and white picture only

thank you for your reply, i have now eliminated the tv as i got the same problem by connecting the dvd player to another tv, i am now going to try the yellow phono connection and if that works then it will have to be the s video out from the dvd. if it is a dvd fault i suppose it will cost more for a repair than a new system would cost, although it is a few years old now i don't want to chuck as it is a really nice unit, well i like it, good sound and does not look old style. are there specialists for repairing dvd units

Re: Black and white picture only

I think if your DVD is outputting S-VIDEO and the socket doesn't take it you get black and white. If you are connecting by SCART have a look in the DVD's set up menu. You could also try connecting a composite cable from the player to the DVD.
