Budget DVD Upscaler

I am just about to purchase my first LCD TV, namely the well recommended Sony KDL 32V4000.
So as an extra I thought I should invest in a DVD upscaler to make the most out of my 300+ DVDs.

I am not looking to spend much more than £80, hopefully at RS where I am getting the TV so I can "negotiate" some sort of deal.

So I am looking for a recommendation for a good player I should be going for.

The Onkyo is a very good upscaler.

Personally would go for a Sony dvd or dvd recorder the scaler in my Rdr-hxd1070 is excellent, the sounds not bad either,
I'm sure the scalers are very similar to the dvd players.

I've just purchased this Sony player from Superfi - the Sony DVPNS708H and am impressed with it:

This player has 1080p over HDMI and should work nicely with your TV - the player is Bravia Sync compatible if your TV has this facility ?

Is the Sony multiregion when it comes or does it need "unlocking"?

I have the Sony KDL 32V4000, so I believe it has Bravia sync!

I don't think the Sony can be made multi-region at home (using a 'hack'). You need to purchase it multi-region if you want it multi-region. As mentioned in my previous post it can be had from Superfi for £68 delivered and they do the upgrade so when you receive it from them it is multi-region out of the box.

Other suppliers can also supply this player multi-regioned, I bought mine from Superfi - delivery for me was next day.

Great, I had read of a few people who had bought it on amazon and ended up with a non multiregion version.
So will look to get it from SuperFi.

As far as I know, no Sony DVD player can be made multiregional with a hack and all of them have to be chipped to achieve this.

My Sony NS76H could be made region free with a One for All remote programmed with special codes and I see that the DVD Player Hacks forum also has a thread for the NS78 as well as the NS76.

With Superfi selling the NS708 for £68 already multi-regioned I wouldn't bother buying it hoping it could be done at home.

I got my fingers burnt long ago when I bought my first DVD player, a samsung. I had read on all forums this player could be multi-regioned using a handset hack, bought the player and then found that mine had a new chipset which meant it couldn't be multi-regioned at home !!! I've always bought my players multi-regioned from a supplier since then. Once bitten, twice shy !

Have you checked out the Toshiba x500? Its now 1p cheaper than £60 at comet.

Just bought the last two on display at my local Comet.

Man at store 'reminded' me that I needed HDMI cables, even though the player includes it's own cable and can also output via component. I wonder if he was going to direct me to the Monster cable aisle
