Looking for recommendations: DivX Player (USB)

Hi,

I was hoping someone could recommend a good divx player.
I just need something that plays divx/xvid, and accept DVDR discs and USB.

A wireless device that could read from my PC (WMP11) would be great, but I'm not too sure what to look for.

This is what I have seen so far.
DV-310-S Pioneer Blu-ray disc, DVD Player - Audio - Video

I need scart connection, not HDMI.

Thanks

Floob.

Re: Looking for recommendations: DivX Player (USB)

The Philips 5980 seems to have been a popular choice and I've seen them in Currys for less than £40 as they have been discontinued. If you do a google search you will find lots on this player.
I believe it has both scart and HDMI. I have an player that I got from Aldi or Lidl a couple of years back and that seems to play anything whether it's on a disc, usb or sd card and it's got a scart!

Re: Looking for recommendations: DivX Player (USB)

Its been running fine for me.
Good price here: £60
Pioneer DV-410V-S DVD Player with HDMI Output, USB Input and High Definition JPEG Playback (Silver) - Scan.co.uk

I use it for watching xVids from the USB stick, works well as far as I can tell.
I use the HDMI output, but Scart works well also.
Could do with more chars displayed on the GUI but I cant really complain.

You may want to read this though:

Re: Looking for recommendations: DivX Player (USB)

Just tried a .wmv (854 x 480) it said the resolution was not supported.

Manual says:
- This player is compatible with WMV9 files
that are encoded by using the Windows
Media Encoder 9 Series, with .wmv as an
extension.
- Compatible with size under 720x576 pixels/
720x480 pixels.
- Advanced Profile is not supported.
- DRM-protected video files will not play in
this player.

I've had no problems with this drive, I use it mostly for playing back xvid files I download which it has no probs with.

Re: Looking for recommendations: DivX Player (USB)

Hi ,

just came on to get a recommendation for a similar player - so finding this threasd is very useful.

Had a Kiss DVD player which got old and then a DVD player from Aldi which keeps freezing on DVD around an hour into films.

Just a couple of questions

- do all USB players play divx films from a USB memory stick?

- do all divx players also play xvid?

- does a hi-def player play SD dvd's okay? (I don't have a HD screen!).

Basically are any of these divx usb players actually high quality - and worth buying for SD films in any event or should I just buy the cheapest? I guess what I really want is reliability - (I'm fed up with crashing).

Any help very gratefully received

Re: Looking for recommendations: DivX Player (USB)

I am looking for a cheap (£50) DVD player that has optical sound output and video output via component (Y,Pb, Pr) that will play DivX / XVid via usb or memory card.

Any ideas as I want reasonable quality, progressive scan etc.
I found this but not sure if the component has progressive scan and i'm sure there must be cheaper out there:

Mini MPEG4 HDMI DVD Player with USB and Card Reader > Maplin

Thanks

Re: Looking for recommendations: DivX Player (USB)

just a quick reply, i picked up a £29 Onn DVD player from ASDA before Christmas, has usb, hdmi and up scales, its connected to a 32 samsung lcd so cant really determine the up scaling quality but its played everything ive thrown at it. It is a worthy replacement for my Phillips divx player which packed in recently.

::EDIT

By everything i mean dvd-r\+r\rw, divx xvid, mp3, usb thumbdrives, ext HDD upto 80gb.

Re: Looking for recommendations: DivX Player (USB)

I'm too looking for a DVD Player which can stream DiVx movies from the USB Port.

I'm looking at the Pioneer DV610AVK

Now my question is.

I have a 32" Toshiba CRT TV, that does NTSC Progressive through Component, can the pioneer supply me that signal for streaming DivX

720 x 576p and 720 x 480p

Can i also force a PAL PROGGRESIVE Divx Movie to play as a NTSC PROGRESSIVE, as my tv only does ntsc progressive

and one other thing :

if a player says it can play divx, does that automatically mean that it can play xvid as well?

Thx

Re: Looking for recommendations: DivX Player (USB)

I just noticed the Oppo CV-980H plays divx etc. and also has a usb port - I'm not sure if this allows play from a usb source or is for firmware upgardes or something.

Does anyone have any experience of the divx/xvid capabilities of this player?

Also I asked before - generally speaking does a Hi-Def screen give a good pic from SD player if you don't upscale?

Thx in advance

Re: Looking for recommendations: DivX Player (USB)

Music - my undertsanding is that Xvid can play on Divx players something to do with xvid being the licence free, open standard version of Divx.

If anybody would like to correct me please feel free

From personal experience my Samsung has managed to play back virtually every xvid I've ever thrown at it even though it only makes reference to Divx on the front of the player and in the manual.

Re: Looking for recommendations: DivX Player (USB)

I'm looking to replace my KISS dvd player.

So far, it's a toss up between the
Philips DVP5990/05
Sony DVP-NS708H
or, the
Panasonic DVD-S54EB-K

It has to be DivX Ultra compliant, Multi Region, with 192 kHz/24-bit audio DAC, & 12-bit/108 MHz video processing. Price isn't a concern.

I find it strange that both Philips & Sony seem to have dropped their own invention - the optical audio out S/PDIF - from their newer dvd players. Anyone know why?

It plays divx/xvid through the usb port and also allows firmware upgrades through usb.

With regard to your second question, its garbage in, garbage out...Even with a good TV, if you hook it up to a crap dvd player then you will get a crap picture.

Re: Looking for recommendations: DivX Player (USB)

Do any of the OPPO dvd players support DivX Ultra ?

Can I play a H.264 file from a USB stick or DVD+R?

I've read that the player is prone to lock-ups during playback - particularly on DivX, XviD, avi files. True or False?

Also, now that the Oppo DV-980H is almost a year & a half old, will there a replacement due soon?
If so, what improvements can we expect?
Or, are Oppo just releasing firmware updates instead?

The OPPO DV-981HD came out in Aug 2007.
Has this been replaced since?

Wait or buy, that is the question!

Re: Looking for recommendations: DivX Player (USB)

The current Oppo SD DVD players do not support H.264 video.

Lock ups? I've never experienced any.

No new replacement for the 980H unless you count the now end of life 983H.
This is to be replaced by the new bluray offering.

Firmware updates are frequent for all models.

My view precisely.

Trouble is the that whilst the new Oppo Blu Ray is reputed to have equally good SD handling capabliities as the 983 - there are a number of possible drawbacks -

(i) it is likely to be very expensive
(ii) it is highly unlikely to have a region free hack for SD or HD discs
(iii) it is uncertain whether it will have divx/xvid capcbilities

I may be wrong about all or any of the above - but that is my understanding from my readings online.

Might be better to buy a 983 (or 980!)_ and a separate blu ray from, say, panasonic which could well be cheaper around and give multi-region capabilities!

Of course it remains to be seen how good Oppo's implementation of blu-ray is going to be!
