Re: Bush BD01 Blu Ray Player!!!!

Depends on whether you count Richer Sounds as the high street. Their price for a Sony BDP-S350 is £169... which doesn't make this look great value.

EDIT: It looks like a Samsung rebadge too. But hey, the more the merrier!!

Re: Bush BD01 Blu Ray Player!!!!

Wow that player looks nasty (cheap and tacky) and the specs are a bit thin on the ground.

Still, as stated above, if this is the beginning of user-region-hackable players on the High Street, bring them on!

Re: Bush BD01 Blu Ray Player!!!!

It's great to see lower priced BR players on the high st. Roll on Asda and Tesco value players !!!!!.
Currys are also offering a Logik player for £199.
I do agree with Kingfats regarding the price as I thought it would be cheaper, I suppose I'm used to internet prices!

Actually if you push Richer Sounds on their price promise you'll get £10 off that to make it £159. Why? Well it's £169.99 at Dabs (but I didn't check postage). Worth a try?

Also, don't forget the one day special when the Sony 350 went for £129 delivered.

Frankly only the great unwashed are likely to buy the Bush. It is ugly and overpriced.

Re: Bush BD01 Blu Ray Player!!!!

Just a side point but if we see future post on a Bush Region B owners section I predic a lot of concerns about firmware updates for this unit. Bush are a part of the Alba company and their site offer little or nothing by way of support!

Re: Bush BD01 Blu Ray Player!!!!

I can see a lot of people buying players like this for Christmas thinking they're getting a great deal, and then having issues come the New Year and the perception of Blu-ray going downhill. That is "if" a lot of people buy them though, which I think they will.

Re: Bush BD01 Blu Ray Player!!!!

I have never been able to recommend cheap DVD players so I would probably do the same for BD. I have had several over the years and they haven't lasted well (one lasted two weeks before it stopped reading discs). I make sure I stick with brand name players and it is even more important with BD as it is still new technology. I am still using a Sony player from 2001 and it has never had one problem or refused to play a single disc.

On the plus side, it might make prices come down even further.

Many of the 'great unwashed/joe public' shop at Argos, so this player could be popular. This, as has been mentioned before, could lead to lower prices from the main BD players if other budget players begin to appear.

Many of the 'great unwashed' arn't bothered about region unlocking/firmware they just want a cheap BD player to play their new films on their 42" Bush LCD (which is still on factory picture setting).

Very true - a fool and his money are easily parted as "they" say. Not convinced that Sony will redcue prices this early just because Bush are in the market at the price they are. I'd say supply outstrips demand at the moment so Sony's prices are being tweaked till it hits the nirvana of max demand + max profit margin. If the 350 RRP dropped to £150 (net prices even lower) I think they'd move lots of units to enthusiasts and the unwashed alike.

Have just down loaded DVD profiler - Thanks. This will help organize my collection as well.

Visa a Vee the great unwashed that I think even the head of Samsung keeps forgetting is nearly all TV's being sold now are some kind of HD. I saw two young women lugging a 32 inch Wharlfdale LCD home from Argos only the other day - and as sure as eggs are eggs these people are going to want equipment to play back on these purchases. That combined with slow download speeds - Fair usage policies - And expensive media ie Large HD's or Big flash drives will all combine to give BD a rosy future for quite a little time yet!

Re: Bush BD01 Blu Ray Player!!!!

If it's true that the Bush player is based on a Samsung design then there should not be major issues as Samsung has been at the forefront of supplying BR players along with Sony and Panasonic.
I remember at the beginning of DVD that Tesco were selling the infamous Wharfedale 750 by the boat loads and Comet were doing quite nicely with their Proline badged player as these were cheaper than the Pansonics and Sony's at the time. They still had firmware issues as DVD was in it's infancy just like BR now.
Whilst I would personally buy a named brand I feel it's good to get BR machinesinto the high st and if this causes demand for discs then we all might see a tumble in disc prices which will benefit as all.
As has been said that the general public who knows little about quality home cinema will hook it up to his Alba/Bush/Goodmans/etc LCD and think it's
marvellous and tell his/her mates how good it is and they should get one. Hence creating demand for players and discs and securing the formats future.

Just my thoughts.

I haven't updated my collection for a while as I lost my login. The latest free version also seems to have less features that I got used to with the previous version.

There is nothing wrong with cheap TV's depending on the person and the reason to buy them. I watch my film on a projector so I didn't want to spend too much on a TV which is just for Freeview. I settled for a £250 32" LCD TV and whilst it isn't a patch on the big name brands, I am happy with it and does the job I bought it for. I would have spent a bit more if the name brands were cheaper at the time but they were over twice the price to what I paid. It also make my projector more impressive every time I switch it on.

The biggest problem is trying to convince people with these cheap TV's that HD is better because the difference may not be any better than DVD on these sets.

I have never had any big problems with players. I boguht the Samsung 807 as my first actual DVD player before they came out with the 709 and all the Wharfedales. It was a cracking player except it didn't play seamless branching discs. I moved straight to a Sony which played everything. My cousin still has it and uses after I bought it 9 years ago.

I agree thats there is nothing wrong with cheap TV's And if indeed my room were suitable for it I might have gone down the projector route. I only have a mid range TV due to having received a small inheritence. That and the fact I'm on good benefits keeps me ever wondering if there is something better out there but thats why I have the tag line that I do at the bottom of my posts

Re: Bush BD01 Blu Ray Player!!!!

I would agree that there is nothing wrong with cheap tv's. I have a cheapie in the kitchen and one in my static caravan and they are good for what they offer at the price.

The question of whether someone can sse the difference between HD and SD on these tv's might not be an issue as there are many people who have been sold the HD idea and will willingly buy a BR player to go along with their SKY HD box "because it's HD" and there is nothing wrong it that. We on this forum have an interest in the subject and will take more care on choosing and get the views of other members on this forum whereas Joe Public will go to Argos or Currys to buy their HD tv and BR and will probably be very happy with it.

Re: Bush BD01 Blu Ray Player!!!!

I again agree. One of the pitfalls of being uninformed is that you may end up with equipment that must replaced sooner rather than later and what seems to be a bargain may prove to be anything but. My first DVD player was a £500 Sony. I gave it to my cousin who still uses it to this day. Looking back on the story of BD so far I can not help thinking Sony would have done themselves a favour by making everything profile 2 from the start! That would aid but early adoptors and the general public alike.

Re: Bush BD01 Blu Ray Player!!!!

That was always the issue with BR compared to HD DVD.
BR was rushed onto the market but as I remember the first DVD players also had problems playing certain films, Matrix is one and Blade seemed to give Philips players a problem.

That reminds me !!!! the other day I was walking past my local Currys (super?)store, to see two helpful sales assistants putting what looked like a 42" plasma (or possibly it was an LCD) TV in the boot of a Mondeo for two women. I watched as they folded down the rear seats, then carefully laid the TV on its back , flat in the boot
I do hope the woman driving didn't go over the speed humps too fast on the way out. Just imagine, getting the TV out at home to find the screen damaged, or plugging it in to see all manner of "pretty colours" from it where the phosphors (if it was a plasma) have been damaged....
Good old Currys eh!!
I have ordered a Sony BDP-S550 and plan to MR hack it for SD-DVD using the one4all remote trick, but if the Bush could be hacked for BluRay MR, then I think it may well be a useful addition to the Jones' system....

Nothing wrong with putting a TV on the side. It wouldn't matter if the TV was like that or right way up if they are going over speed bumps.

That would be a worldwide first if it was hackable for all BD. If it is a Samsung then it won't be.

No not on it's side, flat on its back with the screen facing upwards (or downwards). Transporting any large, flat panel TV (Plasma or LCD) is, as I have been lead to believe is quite a bad idea as the screen can quite easily be damaged due to it flexing under its own weight. Just think, why you see those shop glaziers carrying large panes of glass on the side of the van vertically. If they were carried flat (horizontally like the TV was in the back of the car) then they would easily break.

Graham.

Just think, why you see those shop glaziers carrying large panes of glass on the side of the van vertically. If they were carried flat (horizontally like the TV was in the back of the car) then they would easily break.

Graham.
On its back is on one of its sides and it doesn't matter. It is a urban myth. I have seen 50" plasmas transported just fine over many many miles. How many people can transport a plasma that size upright?

I have had LCD monitors on its back inside the manufactur packaging.

Back to the player.

I would still be careful with something like Bush for playback. I can just imagine people getting confused why a certain disc doesn't play.

Thumbs down Re: Bush BD01 Blu Ray Player!!!!

I tried the Bush website....hopeless unless you want to know about their Freesat boxes. That website is a complete pigs ear you can find out precious little about any other products and as for downloadable firmware...forget it!
For a company that says "Bush Digital is at the forefront of digital TV and radio entertainment for the home and on the move" the website is pants
