Philips DVP5990 and DTS

I just got my new Philips DVP5990 which seems to be a great player.

I realised it didn't have the DTS logo on it, so I went to Philips website and saw this:

"Please note that the set does not support DTS decoding, so you will need to amplify the DTS stream by connecting via Coaxial output."

This happens to be exactly how I have it connected, but what exactly does it mean?

I tested a DVD with DTS soundtrack and it played fine, but does that mean that it's not a true DTS soundtrack? Is there any loss in effects or something like that?

(The AV receiver does lit the DTS logo while playing)

Re: Philips DVP5990 and DTS

As I understand, in simple terms, it means that you wont get DTS out put via the 5.1 analogue outputs..

Re: Philips DVP5990 and DTS

It's curious because even though the DVD player is only conected to the AV receiver through the coaxial cable, still, the receiver will recognise it's a DTS track.

Coaxial is digital way of transferring audio. DTS signals are passed as-they-are without any decoding done by the DVD player. The AV receiver decodes the DTS signals and outputs audio to the speakers. Refer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPDIF for more details.

I was referring to the 6 (5.1) analogue outputs at the back of player. I am not sure of this but if you connect these to the receiver's 5.1 analogue input with 6 RCA cables there would be no sound output or output would be from only 2 front speakers (or, if available, the DVD player may decode dolby tracks on the disc and output these via 5.1 analogue).

Cool Re: Philips DVP5990 and DTS

I don't know if I am talking S**T here, but wouldn't the AV receiver be doing the job (decoding) that the DVD player can't do?

Meaning I AM getting true DTS ... I'm saying that because I do get the surround effect and everything.

Re: Philips DVP5990 and DTS

With Philips there may not be a full endorsement/licensing issue from DTS with regards the logo which I'm speculating on.

I've noticed they never have dts on their players yet it recognises and bitstreams to your AV Receiver.

Re: Philips DVP5990 and DTS

I can conirm that the Philips 5990 does indeed squirt DTS out from either the HDMI or digital connection.
The Philips doesn't have analogue 5.1 outputs only 2ch analogue outputs (with only Dolby downmixed)
The other phono connections are for component and composite connections
