Re: Sony BDP-S5000ES Anyone!

Don't replace your AX10i-s with an LX81. The LX81 is a £1500 unit which to be spread alot further nowadays with HD/HDMI/video scaling etc than it did when av amps were essentially amps rather than audio visual hubs as they are going towards now.

The AX10i-s is something of a masterpeice.

http://translate.google.co.uk/transl...3Doff%26sa%3DG

Have a read through about it's sheer build quality.

Don't expect the LX81 to be anything like as well built or sound as good. I'm assuming the AX10 has an 8 channel input as my DSP-Z9 has, if it does then get the S5000ES player and hook it up that way to get HD audio, the Sony has a pretty serious DAC stage with it's own dedicated linear power supply.

The load speed for this new sony is 6 seconds from what I've heard.

I suspect your correct, just thought the lx81 being new tech and all things may have moved on. yes the ax10is does have a multi channel in.

Re: Sony BDP-S5000ES Anyone!

is the pioneer lx91 specced similair tot he sony s5000es.

if i stick with my amp it will come down to those two i think. the LX91 seems to have a real beefed up analog stage but it will most likly be £500 more than the sony, so no small margin.

The LX91 also has two HDMI outs as well.
Sony specs.

Re: Sony BDP-S5000ES Anyone!

The Sony has a very nice analogue stage itself. However I wish someone would make a player that converts the HD codecs to multichannel PCM or DSD over i.Link, there must be alot of people with last generation flagships with i.Link inputs. It seems obvious to me to make use of that in conjunction with Blu ray, I heard the LX91 was going to have i.Link onboard. Is it a SACD player too? If not, why would it have i.Link?

Yeah, i've just seen that. Oh well, analogue it is then.

I've just seen some pics of the innards of the LX91

Good god, Pioneer have made something very special indeed there. I thought there wouldn't be much between the Sony and the Pioneer Flagships but looking at the innards Sony are going to have to produce something staggeringly good to beat the LX91.

Re: Sony BDP-S5000ES Anyone!

I think everyone is going to have to come up with something special but is the lx91 worth the extra money?? certainly the lx91 and sony s5000 have to be 2 of the best options for us guys with older flagship amps.

Orginally a BDP-LX90 was planned to match the SC-LX90 amp, this player had SACD, DVD-A and I-Link. Pioneer decided to pull the plug on it and leave alot of people waiting for the Denon and Oppo players due for release in Q1. Pioneer have received alot of stick about not including SACD, I see it as a sign they are losing interest in Enthusiast sales and aiming more at the boutique end of things. I-Link could legally carry all 5.1 Bluray formats at full quality but it is looking unlikely that we will every see an ILink equipped Blu player.

Kind of back on topic.... Any pricing or availability on the SACD player? (Looks like it could be the an awesome last gasp player for the format)

Hi Kingfats,

I assumed Krobar meant the Sony SCD-XA5400ES. Might be wrong though.

Thats the one. I was hoping Kourosh had maybe seen pricing and availability for this one.

With a full balanced stereo section, HDMI (With DSD and Cec Flow Control) and a multichanger it is an excellent looking player if I ever upgrade my prepro (No Ilink means it is a step back with current setup).

Re: Sony BDP-S5000ES Anyone!

The 5400ES will be a £1000 player I think. It'll have the latest features but not the build quality or component/chassis quality of those previous more expensive players.

The best SACD players are either the SCD-1 or it's replacement the SCD-DR1. Which is a £7000 machine only available in Japan. Sony always seem to do that with their most expensive kit.

I suppose it depends how you want to hook it up to your amp. If via HDMI, then the 5400ES, if i.Link maybe the DVP-NS9100ES, if multichannel analogue, the SCD-XA9000ES is the best multi channel SACD player they made and if 2 channel analogue the SCD-777ES/SCD-1.

Re: Sony BDP-S5000ES Anyone!

Guys, I don't think we have to worry about i-link any more. I don't think it would be much of a solution for HD audio soundtracks either, as the adaptive flow control can only be used with CD, SACD and DVD-A playback. Anything with video, and the amp would interfere with the video synchronisation.

I've had high hopes for the SC-LX81 for a long time, and I thik we're going to see a lot of very enthusiastic reviews in the near future. I generally don't believe a word that what hifi say, but here's one anyway, and I suspect it knocks the AX10AVI into history:

http://whathifi.com/Review/Pioneer-SC-LX81/

Notice that it has PQLS over HDMI. Thats essentially the same process as i-link. I reckon you could safely couple that up to the new Sony SCD-XA5400ES or Pioneer BDP-LX781A with PQLS or HATS on HDMI, and get the same performance as i-link.

If I hadn't just bought another TA-DA9000ES, I think I might just be going down that road....

Nick :-)

I suppose it depends how you want to hook it up to your amp. If via HDMI, then the 5400ES, if i.Link maybe the DVP-NS9100ES, if multichannel analogue, the SCD-XA9000ES is the best multi channel SACD player they made and if 2 channel analogue the SCD-777ES/SCD-1.
Thanks for the tips. I already have a Pioner 868 with ILink.

I-Link would be of use to me on the 5400 because I could use the 5400 without quality loss in surround mode in my current setup (AFAIK the 5400 is a multichanger which is rather useful). Without ILink the 5400 becomes one of those source components I would only get if I upgrade my preamp first.

Re: Sony BDP-S5000ES Anyone!

Hmm that looks pretty tempting along with the reciever, Im wondering how these things would compare to my Arcam avr350 in terms of musicality. The new sacd player looks interesting too.

Shame this is so much money i really really like it. I would have snapped one up if it was under £400.

Re: Sony BDP-S5000ES Anyone!

I would have expected 2 HDMIs, like the Pioneer LX91, at this price (equivalent $2900 in Japan).
