I'm using an LG DVD Player (Model DVX298H) to view digital photos on a Pioneer flatscreen TV (Model PDP-4280XD). With JPEG images around 3-4 Megapixel in size, the transition from one photo to the next is very slow - 8 to 9 seconds. Using smaller images - around 0.5 - 0.6 Megapixel - reduces this time to about 4 seconds.
What's limiting the speed of transition? Is there a hardware change I could make to speed up the process?

I expect its the CPU used in the player. The pictures have to be decompressed and then rescaled down to tv resolution so bigger files just take longer to process.
