Component Cable Length

I am looking for a component (YUV) cable to connect my Limit 9900 to my Panasonic 42PWD5 screen. I have found a couple of good posts on the forums already, but had a couple of extra questions.

1. I would like to hide the cable in the wall void to keep my setup nice and neat. Doing that will increase the cable length to about 6 metres. What effect will that have on the signal? Is there an optimum length for component cables which should not be exceeded? I could actually use a 1.5 metre cable if I ran it in the open, how would that compare?

2. I am interested in what quality of cable you think I need. The Panny has superb PQ, but whilst I am very pleased with it, the Limit is not a high performance machine - so I wonder whether spending £100+ on an interconnect is not just a waste of money.

I could probably get a cable from Bluejeans for about £50 ... do you think that would be adequate?

3. I have a final question which relates to my second setup. I have a 42" Toshiba RPTV (not sure of the model no. but it is a 4:3 set) and have a Pioneer 717 DVD player connected to it. At the moment it is connected via s-video. Do you think I should consider connecting via SCART RGB instead? ... will this improve the picture greatly?

Finally, just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posts such useful info on these boards. I have been reading them for some months and have found them invaluable.

Hi,

The one from Blue Jeans will be excellent - I've bought several cables from them recently and I am very impressed by them. They use broadcast quality Belden cable and Canare connectors. A 6m length is no problem for a component video signal if good quality screened cable is used.

Regarding your other set-up, I think you should notice an improvement in picture quality if you use an RGB Scart instead of S-video. Try www.hificables.co.uk for a good selection. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dutch - that's useful - I always like to hear of satisfied customers before ordering stuff from abroad.

I will definitely get a good quality scart for my RPTV setup too.

Many thanks for the advice.

I'll let you know how I get on.

sharkbait, if the cable terminations are true 75 ohm, cable length is virtually a non-issue.

BlueJeans cables are true 75 ohm and I too can vouch for their quality.

I have the Canare V5-CFB with Canare connectors at 25 feet and its a lovely cable.

I recommend Supra cables, good quality and ok pricing. I use a 12 meter cable with excellent results. Price £50.

I bought a Profigold 10m cable from CPC for £33. I tried it against a 5m £5 cheapie, and a DIY 10m cable using £2 Maplin connectors each end. I was testing them on a Toshiba SD520e and an NEC HT1000.

There was no perceptible difference between any of them.

Hi lonny,

Yes, order from the site - they don't have a UK distributor. Their shipping charges are very reasonable but be aware you may get charged for VAT and import duty.

I got charged both VAT and import duty calculated on the complete value of the order (ie including postage!) then ParcelForce who delivered it from Customs in London to my home whacked on another 7 quid!!!!!

Came to £27 in total.

What can you do though?!

Stick to Belden and 75 ohm CI plugs (Canare or cable pro), Elliot will sort you out here (and others shortly), anything less is a compromise and we are not talking silly money either, just the best (and yes I have dozens here I have tested here, literally). It will allow you to upgrade you limit at a a later dat when funds become available (rec).

Don't forget me Mr Beekeper

Another thread about component cables is here

As The Beekeeper says, buy a well terminated cable, a good cable will last you for a few projector upgrades.

I can make something nice for you, but not for £50 for a 15M.

15M is a long component cable, so avoid a cheapy if you want a really good picture.

I have another make of a quality copper cored SDI coax that is cheaper than the Belden 1694A , Specs are good, used it many times for RGBHV cables etc, for the financially challenged

If I have enough left on the reel, I will sort something out for you nice and cheap. Always like to help people on the forums.

I might buy a reel of the 7710A in a few weeks if anyone would be interested in buying any really nice component cables.
Would cost a bit more than Bluejeans cables, but would be hand assembled in Yorkshire.

Mark.

Hi Kim,

I got the cable from CPCs:

http://custom1.farnell.com/cpc/produ...uct%5Fid=30579

Do a search for 'RGB' and you'll find most of their range of component cables.

I think they did some single phono to phono plug leads that were 15m long - try the search facility and see what you get, otherwise you may have to buy some 75ohm coax (twinscreened with a foil shield is good for stopping interference), and solder the ends on.

I used some cheap BT2003 twin screend coax with Maplins phono plugs, and that was just as good as the Profigold ones. I think that's something like £40(inc vat) for a 100m drum. Add some connectors and it's around £50.

If you don't find anything, and don't fancy soldering yourself, let me know, and I may be able to sort something out for you.

Gary.

Hi gary, thanks your helping. I sent a message to www.vdctrading.com to ask about the 75ofc video lead (stock code is 110-273) three 15-m long cable only £11.94 (excl. vat). each. The technical manager Giles told me that the cable can do the job for video component. What do u think this cable?

I've got three 75Ohm 3M Van Damme cables I bought from VDC for component use (and bought a couple more for the digital connection from DVD to processor) No problems & a good picture. Good price, £7 each.

Hi Kim,

that stuff loks fine, and isn't a bad price, so buy it..

Have you got any cheaper/shorter leads you can compare it with?

It'll be interesting to see if there's any difference. I've yet to see any myself...

The 520 is better than the Limit in video output via component. I's only negative, is that it's only NTSC progressive.

I've had both and would buy the 520 - Richer sounds do them for £170 if you use Mays What Hi-Fi advert.

Just go and buy the What Hi Fi magazine, and show the ad to them.

If you can't find any, use www.kelkoo.co.uk to find lots of on-line ads for the 520 and some of those will be around £175. Print them out and RS will price beat the price by £10 if the 'net sellers have them in stock.

Update

Thanks for the advice guys.

I bought a QED AV21 SQUART for my RPTV setup and am really pleased with the result. The picture is noticably better than the s-video connection I used previously. The QED cable is extremely well constructed and as my other half put it ... "is a very pretty blue colour". It has left me with a setup dilemma, but I will post that in another forum.

For my plasma setup I ordered a 20 foot component cable from Bluejeans and it arrived this morning. Oh my God ... that's a serious cable - looks like the sort of thing I should be putting fires out with!

Bluejeans were very helpful and promptly answered my enquiries. The cable arrived 4 days after ordering - although I did get stung for import duty.

I will be trying the component cable out this evening and will let you know what I think.

Once again, thanks for the help.
