As far as I'm aware it won't play HD of any kind, you can only upscale standard definition content.

The only way you're gonna play hd-dvd's is on a hd-dvd player, the only hi-def content you can watch is to either get sky-hd or a blu-ray player, which incidentally will not play hd-dvds.

Re: I'm an idiot Philips DVP5980

Hi

Without wishing to be brutal you are in a bit of a pickle. The TV is not the best of quality sets and HD-DVD is a dying format. The one piece of good kit is the DVD player but as you have found its a SD upscaling player and on the TV its not surprising you dont notice a difference.

You could pick up one of the HD-DVD players that have now dropped to less than £100 and play that through your TV but apart from the few HD-DVD's you have and possibly picking some up cheap now there wont be many more releases.

You could convert your HD-DVD's on your PC and then stream to a HD capable media extender such as the Istar or Popcornhour (£140).

Its a case of saving until you can afford a better setup and making do with SD upscaling. Rip your HD-DVD's and sell them on to start your fund.

Additionally you don't mention how the DVD is connected to the TV

If its via HMDI the player is doing the upscaling rather than the TV. This may give a better picture - depending if the upscaling circuit is better in the philips or the AS.
