DVD 5960 480P problem

Hi there folks, hoping for some help with this as i am completely baffled by it.
I have searched for ages all forums and have myself google eyed never mind goggle eyed trying to find a solution. Please take the time to read full post as i have included as much info as i can to hopefully help.
I have a Panasonic 42 " Plasma, model No. 42PX60b, this is coupled to a Sony AV amp model No. STR-DG510.
After buying the amp i decided to buy an upscaling HDMI DVD player and decided on the Philips DVD 5960.
Set everything up using HDMI lead to connect DVD to Amp with amp then also connected to TV using HDMI. I also have virgin+ box connected by HDMI to Amp. DVD audio out is by coaxial audio to the amp.
My problem is that the DVD should be able to cycle through various deinitions. 480P, 576P, 720P and 1080i, however when i go into setup on the DVD the only option available is 480P. Also when i press the button on the front of the DVD to cycle through the various definitions there is no change, 480P remains as the only option. I did a firmware upgrade although the latest firmware was showing as being on the machine but no difference.
OK here is where it gets annoying, on a few occasions i have entered set up and been able to select the other definitions, no rhyme or reason why it has been available, i have tried various options of which device i switch on first. Eventually i got fed up and exchanged the DVD for a replacement, same model.
Came home and set it up, wonders never cease, all options available and i was able to cycle through all definitions, i was as happy as a dog with 2 bones. Then last night the roof came crashing in, switched on to watch a movie and guess what, yip stuck again at 480P. I have swapped cables, switched them round no change.
I have also connected my DVD to the amp cable input and the cable box to the amp DVD input and the fault followed, i.e. the dvd still only showed as 480P but my cable box properly showed as 720P despite being plugged into the DVD input so this would suggest to me that the fault is definitely with the DVD player. This fault occurs whether watching a DVD or Divx file via USB.
One final point in case it has any relevance to anyone is that with both machines on a rare occasion i have had the message Non HDCP compliant device attached flash up on screen. Now as far as i am aware all devices are HDCP compliant and if there was an issue then i would not expect it to work at any time. Best i can come up with is that there is some kind of intermittent HDCP handshake problem.
So can anyone try to throw some light on this or offer some other suggestions. Thanks for any help.

Re: DVD 5960 480P problem

Hi all, just a small update.
Went downstairs after posting original message and switched on DVD and it allowed all definitions to be seen.
Can anyone think if there is some order that the set up i have should be switched on in that enables all of the components to marry up properly. I know other people have had similar problems so i think there must be something to do with compatibility issues if one device is switched on before another, i have tried various options but cant seem to replicate a definitive order. can anyone think of any other reason other than a totally random one.

Re: DVD 5960 480P problem

I have read through loads of posts on this forum and there are a lot of technical responses so there are some people with a good understanding of the various setups and problems that are out there, has no one any thoughts on why this problem is happening. I have found quite a few similar type postings so i know it aint limited to me. I love trying to find a solution to any problem with pcs or other electrical items but this one has me stumped, last night dvd would only show as 480P, no other definitions selectable, and yet night before 720 was auto selected with the option of changing to all other available choices. Come on any techies out there, what do you think could be causing this.

Re: DVD 5960 480P problem

Hi,

Given that you've tested the TV input with another source and it has no problem accepting higher res inputs, short of trying a different HDMI cable, the only other possibility is a duff player as far as I can see.
