Standalone DVD player and PS3?

I have just bitten the bullet and picked up a PS3. I have a load of SD DVDs and want to get the best out of them. I am happy to pay, say, 250 for a second hand standalone player if there would be a decent audio/video/features improvement over the PS3. WOuld it be worth it and what players should I be considering? The Pioneer 989 is the one that stands out to me.

Cheers

Re: Standalone DVD player and PS3?

Are you not happy with the PS3's ability to upscale SD DVD to 1080p whilst outputting AC3 or DTS via the optical output?

Well,if your amp can do LPCM over hdmi then just use the ps3.If you've only got coaxial or optical then get the pioneer

It has 2 hdmi,just use the ps3.

I should have explained that the PS3 has not arrived yet so my question is hypothetical (at the moment)

My amp can do LPCM but could I not do the Pioneer to my amp via LPCM? Also, picture wise would the Pioneer and the PS3 be on par?

Cheers

Re: Standalone DVD player and PS3?

Yeah the pioneer would do sd-dvd,but it's blu-ray on the ps3 where you wanna be.

I'm not saying the ps3 is on a par with the pioneer when it comes to upscaling,it's just difficult to ignore the blu-ray side of things.

Re: Standalone DVD player and PS3?

Thanks again Ian.

I am definitely getting the PS3, which I will use for gaming/bluray but I want to know whether it is worth me getting a Pioneer, for example, to get the best out of SD DVDs. My question really is; for SD DVDs is the Pioneer noticeably better than the PS3 for audio/video?

Re: Standalone DVD player and PS3?

Thanks for the link. Perhaps I will pick up a relatively cheap player for multiregion duties.

Re: Standalone DVD player and PS3?

If you want the best SD and great CD audio from a single player you could do worse than the Yanaha DVDS2700, currently reduced from nearly a grand to 299 at Peter Tyson.

Just got mine and the performance is stunning with both.
