Hello all,

I'm currently building a new system and, although I have a PS3 & I'm probably soon going to buy a Toshiba HD EP35 to play my HD-DVDs, I'd like an SD DVD player to use mainly for kids movies etc.

The signal will be sent through an upscaling AV Receiver (either Onkyo 905 or Denon 3808 - I've not decided yet), so the upscaling ability isn't important, as long as it outputs via HDMI.

What I'm really interested in is its speed when first turning on/loading a DVD and its fluidity with layer changes. I have an old JVC DVD player and it loads quickly but stutters on layer changes. My Phillips (5980?) takes almost as long as my HD DVD player to load but has no intelligible pause on layer changes.

I'd been looking at the Denon range as they have layer change buffers, but I've heard reports of them not being seamless.

Any advice? Recommendations? Thoughts? Comments?

The first thought that comes into my mind is.....will your kids take even the slightest bit of notice of a layer change?

I can confirm that my Denon 2930 is completely seamless with layer changes.
I have never noticed one yet, in a years worth of viewing.
It would be a needlessly expensive purchase, just for the kids to watch their movies though.

Thanks for the replies. I'm sorry, I didn't explain fully.

It's true, I don't expect anyone but me to notice the layer change but I too was hoping to use the unit to play regular DVDs and I know it'll bug me after a while.

The loading up speed thing was mainly for my nephew, who doesn't like waiting for the disc to eject once he's pushed the button, so presses again... and again... you get the picture!

I was hoping to relieve my PS3 and HD DVD player of the work (and little fingerprint dirt!) of standard DVDs. You're right though, I've never noticed a layer change on the PS3.
