Weird sound thing with old Toshiba player

I have a Toshiba SD220e which is maybe 6 years old I guess. It still works fine, but I've recently added an AV amp to the setup for the first time.

The Toshiba has a setting in the Audio Setup Menu for output format, either Analog 2ch, Bitstream or PCM. As my speaker system is 2.1 and I'm using a digital cable, I set it to PCM.

This works for most DVDs fine. However on one that I've discovered (a Spinal Tap edition) the sound comes out very weirdly - whenever the drums start, the rest of the sound dips, like it's being massively overcompressed and the drums are ducking the output.

By trial and error I discovered that this is fixed by setting the Audio Menu setting to Analog 2ch (even though I'm still using the coax cable!), but then for other DVDs no sound comes out at all!

Can anyone explain what is going on? And would this situation be fixed by having a newer DVD player?

Thanks
Andy

If you have your SD220 connected to your amp using a coaxial cable, then your player should be set to output Bitstream.

Re: Weird sound thing with old Toshiba player

Ah yes, thanks for that! What had confused me was that the very first disc I tried it with was one I'd authored myself from a Freeview PVR recording. And if I select Bitstream in the DVD player menu absolutely no sound comes out. When I select PCM, I hear sound, but that setting causes problems on some other DVDs as described above.

I will have to experiment and see if I can find out what setting I can tweak in the authoring software to make it code the disc with sound that will come out in the Bitstream format.

Any clues? This disc was made with VideoRedo TV Suite, and I think the options I can apply to the audio output are:

No Change / MPEG audio / LPCM

My guess is that it defaulted to No Change, but I probably need to set it at MPEG audio?

Thanks
Andy
