As a new member, I am curious to know if everyone else gets as irritated as I do with DVD players - if I have bought or rented a DVD, I fail to see why I am prevented from fast forwarding through trailers, credits and endless pleas NOT to get pirate DVD's or download material. Is there a hack which can overcome this, or are there players which will over-ride this?

There are always hacks around but it's not anything i've ever looked into. Thre are, however, ways to get round the ads using different combnations of buttons on the remote control, although it varies with the player and the DVD itself. Here's some to try:

- Fastforward
- Next/Skip up
- Menu
- Title
- Return
- As soon as the DVD begins, press Stop (once or twice) and then Play
- Press stop, and then a number key

I find skip usually works on my player.

All depends on the disc, really. Some discs only allow Fast Forward, some allow skip, some allow menu.....

My understanding is that the manufacturers want to insist that the viewer sit through the Legal Warning screens about copying their owned stuff and also want to force the viewer to sit through the studio's pompus promotional lead-in (roaring lion or rotating planet or whatever).

You can usually bypass trailers/previews for other films and ads by, as already posted, pushing the Menu button on your remote and somtimes the skip or forward to next play segment/chapter.

Alas, the only way to avoid watching the warnings and other disc maker promos is to decrypt the disc because it is within the encryption instruction set that those restrictions reside.

Alas, while removing the proprietary encryption is technically quite simple it is also quite illegal.

I've been able to skip through the trailers on every DVD I own with the exception of one: 'Lord of War' R2. This particular disc forces you to sit through 'Mars' and 'Amnesty International' adverts and I couldn't find any way to get rid of them. A disgrace!

What I find particularly irritating is the "Piracy Is a Crime" stuff. I have honestly purchased or rented the disc, and being forced wo watch this stuff makes me feel like I'm being treated as a potential criminal (correction - I AM being treated as a potential criminal!).

I don't watch Pirate DVD's, but I have a funny feeling that, if I did, they would conveniently have had the "Piracy" warning removed.

How's that for completelt failing to target your audience ???!!!

Why not try putting the disc in, then going and making a cup of tea. You'll probably find it's on the menu by the time you get back!
