Oppo 980 vs 981

Apologies if this had been brought up before but im thinking of getting one of the above DVD players for its upscaling ability. I have read different reports on these two and getting slightly confused by it all.

I own a Sony 40v3000 TV so am i right in thinking the 980 would be better for me? Ive read the 981 is for better for larger TV's (46" plus?)

Ive also read that the 980 doesnt upscale region 2 DVDs (surely thats wrong?)

I just want a DVD player with excellent upscaling ability, can anyone advise me which one to go for or an alternative?

Many Thanks

Re: Oppo 980 vs 981

The 980 is ment to provide an interlaced stream to a scaler, the 981 has a good scaler build in and is probably what you want.
The new oppo 983 is out soon which will be a flagship player, but will be more expensive, really in a different league to the 981, and so will not replace it but simply sit above it. It will be more expensive when it coems out though so depending on your budget...

Puit simply if you want the player to do the scaling (and maybe deinterlacing) you get the 980, if you want an external box or a tv to do the scaling then the 980 would be for you.

Re: Oppo 980 vs 981

What would be the difference if my TV were to do the scaling compared to if the DVD player did?
