i think i read somewhere that you can attach external hard drives as long as they're formatted as FAT32 and not NTFS

You may need to partition the hard drive into 32MB partitions !

Why such a big hard drive ?

I know this is lightly off track, but, can anyone tell me if the USB connection on this machine can be used to download the latest firmware onto the 5980? or do you have to "burn" the firmware to a disc and update it that way?

Thanks

I've got an 8GB flash drive that works fine, but my Western Digital 250GB drive (FAT32) can't be read.
Any suggestions ?

TIA

I've got a 500gb hard drive formatted FAT32 in only one partition and 5980 player plays everything on my HD

Some flash drives require too much power from the USB for the player, here's a good/bad list:-

I managed to get my 250GB portable hard drive working. I purchased a powered usb hub, and one of those twin end USB cables ( mini-usb to usbdata and usb power). The drive is connected directly to the DVD player, and additional power comes from the USB hub. Works fine now
