Sony BDP S500 Faulty?!

Hi,

Sorry to have to seek advice, but I'm 1, new and 2, not particularly impressed with what was supposed to be a lovely Christmas gift from my girlfriend.....

Having unwrapped and plugged in my BDP S500 yesterday, I was met with pretty much nothing from it! It powers on, the splash screen comes up (eventually!!), then it does nothing, no buttons on the remote appear to make it do anything, pressing menu keys illicit no response and it just seems to cycle through powering up. I'm getting mightily fed up with the damn thing!

Is this a common fault, or have I just the fortune of a complete dud on Xmas day? Having looked at the threads and various other comments on the net, the 300 appears to have issues, although they can be sorted via the firmware upate, however from reading on Sony how to install the firmware update, as I cant even get into a menu, I dont think this is going to help me is it?!!!

Could anyone shed some light, or just confirm as I thought that this needs to be returned, so I can wait weeks for the Xmas post to eventually bring me another???!!!!!

For reference, I have tried to connect it with both HDMI and S Video, to both my Plasma and Projector, however nothing other than the above happens with either (exactly how long should I wait for the menu screen to appear - 5 mins long enough......?!!!)

I would be most grateful for some pointers (shouting at the retailer is not a pointer I need, trust me the missus will be doing that!!!)

Kind regards

Sounds like you may ave a dud. I have the same model and whilst it does seem like an enternity to power on, it should take about 45 secs to bring up the Sony DVD screen.

Have you been able to complete the initial setup process? As I recall the instructions state you have to power up without a DVD in the player and run through the initial setup routine before use.

Re: Sony BDP S500 Faulty?!

Do you have the HDMI cable connected? If yes, is the TV set at the corresponding HDMI port?

I have discovered that it takes longer to power on etc (it may even take literally forever) if the TV is not on and the TV input is not set at the HDMI port the S500 is connected through.

Hope this helps...
