Pioneer BDP-LX70A or PS3???

I wanna get a new Blu-ray player and quite like the Pioneer LX70A, but will this player be an advantage over my PS3 that i use for BD playback. I know it decodes TrueHD and DTS HD-MA that i can feed into my amp, but will picture quality be better than the PS3 or will i see not much difference?

Many thanks for reading and hopefully your replies.

Regards
John

Hi Lord Bunky
I have compared both (in my home) and hand on heart, cannot see any improvement in PQ pefromance from the Pioneer BDP-LX70A over the Ps3.
The Pioneer is one hell of a nice player, though.

Re: Pioneer BDP-LX70A or PS3???

So really im better to get a new amp than a new player? I like that LX70A so much too lol. Just that i heard DTS-MA playing in my local AV shop, all i can say is WOW! But i dont think the PS3 can pass a DTS-MA bitstream, or am i wrong in thinking that?

Hi mate
The Ps3 can't pass any HD audio Bitsream,i'm afraid.
Internal decoding for DTS-MA is promised, though.

Hi

I have both players, having placed the LX70A in the main system and the PS3 in the bedroom. Both have very good picture quality, the LX70A being slightly superior. The LX70A, as you know, will decode all current codecs, so LPCM through HDMI is no problem. The PS3 gets very hot and the fan can be loud - no such problems with the LX70A. The main system is very revealing and clearly shows the LX70A to be a better player.

Hope this helps

Re: Pioneer BDP-LX70A or PS3???

I own a PS3 as well as Pioneers earlier LX70 model, with both machines playing on my 508xd I'd be lying if I said I could tell a difference, let alone 'far better' and 'quite a jump'.

I've always been a great believer in the saying 'you get what you pay for' and therefore having spent close to £1,000 on the Pioneer was fully expecting it to wipe the floor with the PS3 as far as picture and sound go, especially seeing as the PS3 was almost 3 times less expensive. But honestly, I really do struggle to see a difference between the two machines.

I've sat through a large number of Bluray's now and am constantly amazed at the sound and picture the PS3 is capable of delivering. Whilst I hear BBC HD's presentation of Finding Nemo was rock solid, our family chose to watch Ratatouille on Bluray yesterday. Seeing as this was a region A disc from the US, the Pio wouldn't play it so we ran it on the PS3. It was a mesmeric experience with every single pixel absolutely perfect, the PCM soundtrack was amazingly atmospheric, pin sharp and tight, I really struggle to imagine 'how' and in what 'ways' this could be bettered on the Pioneer?

But, I'm fully open to be convinced otherwise?

I've been told personally by Pioneer's UK product manager that the 'A' variant of their BDPLX70 contains zero changes to it's visual processing/delivery capabilities.

So far, I'm with Kingfats but I'd love to hear some 'facts' or some tests that can be carried out to back up the 'far superior' or 'quite a jump' calls...

Re: Pioneer BDP-LX70A or PS3???

You may also want to consider the Panasonic DMP-BD30. Produces a sharper image compared to my PS3 and allows for HD audio bitstream out, you will need a compatible receiver though.

The DMP-BD30 is a US machine, therefor will only play R1 SD DVD's. This baby cost me £330 including shipping, V.A.T and duty. FANTASTIC player and value for money too.

Re: Pioneer BDP-LX70A or PS3???

Yeah i just took a butchers on the PS3 so really its just the DTS-MA thats lacking. So a firmware might come along for the DTS-MA side of things. Maybe an amp will be better lol. Life can be tough sometimes

I have found that the Pioneer LX70 A is a considerable jump over the LX70, and I didnt pay anywhere near £1000. I think much depends on the quality of the system its connected to. The difference between PS3 and any dedicated player wont always be obvious in middle of the road systems. I think the PS3 is a remarkable product in terms of flexibility etc but when you examine PQ and SQ via a processor with top class video switching and D/A coversion, fed through top class amplification and speakers its obvious that the Pioneer is superior.

The Pioneer can hold sounds in mid-air, not just at the speaker, so you can accurately pin point the location of a sound in the room. The difference in PQ is that BD is more natural with the LX70A, skin tones looking more like they should compared to the PS3 which can portray colours which, whilst impressive, don't bear any relation to reality.

Finding Nemo - Any computer generated film will look good - its digital. The real test is film, skin tones, compare colours and textures to real life - this is the real test, along with motion capability. Sharpness and contrast are other marks of a good picture.
