Major HD Audio confusion
Right, Im getting confused as too how i could get DTS-HD and DOLBY True HD sound into my ears!
If i bought the Sony 3300ES Receiver and connected it to a 5.1 speaker system and connected it to the BDPS300 blu ray player would i receive HD sound?
I understand that the 3300ES cannot decode HD sound so the BD player would have too do the HD SOUND decoding and send it to the receiver as Uncompresed PCM? AM i correct?
I'm sure it;s simple but they word some of the specs that i get confused lol!
ANy help is much appreciated!
Edit - I think ive kind of figured it out...According to the sony website the S500 decodes HD Audio but the S300 doesent....so......if my setup looked like this -
BDPS500 - 3300ES(via HDMI) - 40W2000(via HDMI) Would i be able too listen too DTS-HD and DOLBY TRUE HD?

Hi Febs
Yep,your correct mate!
You'll be able to listen to TrueHD on your set up.Not DTS-HD though,as no player at present can decode this internally and send it LPCM.

Re: Major HD Audio confusion
Ahhh right cheers. Umm any idea when there's going too be players capable of DTS Decoding on the market?
I was originally thinking about the 5300es but I dont think i can quie make the stretch lol!
Does the PS3 decode DOLBY TRUE HD?...if it does then i could just continue too use that until BD players with DTS-HD decoding come to the market!

Re: Major HD Audio confusion
Yep PS3 decodes Dolby True HD and it is rumoured it will eventually decode DTS-HD MA, but no one knows if or when..
I thought there was a standalone BR player that can decode DTS-HD MA now??? Is there not??
Oh and for amp/receivers... check out the Onkyo's too...

Re: Major HD Audio confusion
So PS3 decodes most of the HD sound formats so far onboard and outputs them as LPCM right?
Can it be set so it just passes the data off the disk so they can be decoded by your amp, so you could use a DTS-HD MA soundtrack for example if your amp is capable?

Re: Major HD Audio confusion
Hi Baseley09,
Yes the PS3 will decode DD+ and DD TrueHD and output them as PCM. It will however not decode DTS-HD MA or DTS-HD HR it will only extract the core DTS, althought this is at 1.5Mbs, which is far higher than standard old DTS from SD DVD's.
It looks doubtfull IMO that the PS3 will ever output bitstream of any HD audio codecs... but no one knows for sure. AFAIK there aren't even any 'rumours' of when this could happen, so it is probably a long way away even if it's possible..
It's one of my only niggles with the PS3 as after hearing DTS-HD MA decoded in the amp, and with the number of Fox BR exclusive titles that have DTS-HD MA, I really wish it would!!

Re: Major HD Audio confusion
Just to clarify.
The S500 will decode DTS-HD HR (high resolution) but not DTS-HD MA. I know it is very confusing, but there are essentially 4 DTSs
DTS standard DVD rate
DTS core (same standard as DTS standard DVD rate but at 1.5MBits which will be audibly better)
DTS-HD HR (An improved lossy scheme that can go up to a few Megabits but I don't know of any discs that use it)
DTS-HD MA (Lossless and should sound the same as other lossless formats(!) such as TrueHD and PCM)

Cheers John, I thought there was a DTS-HD MA decoding BR player out there, I must have been thinking about the Sony S500.. shame, so close yet so far!

Unfortunately the need for DTS-HD MA decoding isn't just because it may sound better than the same sound track which is coded in DD True HD, but for the example I gave of Fox. As many (if not all) Fox titles only have DTS-HD soundtracks.. There is no DD TrueHD or PCM alternative. As Fox is BR exclusive and possibly one of the largest contributers to many peoples BR libaries I don't think the need for DTS-HD MA should be under estimated.
Well IMHO it is important

Just to add my two cents worth but why has Fox encoded their Blu-Ray discs with DTS variants that we can't decode?
It's not going to push Blu-ray in any way if we can't hear the lossless (MA) sound.
Why didn't they use PCM or Dolby TrueHD until we could use DTS HD MA?
Sad thing is I've spent close to £1000 on upgrading my kit and I STILL can't use Foxes soundtracks properly.
Hence I'm using my HD DVD player instead.

Re: Major HD Audio confusion
Fox probably regret getting into bed with DTS, but they are stuck with it regardless of player capability.
It is crazy having to find a player that decodes DTS-HD MA just to play Fox discs, but there it is!
I believe Denon are supposed to be releasing a player that can decode DTS-HA MA in the first half of 2008.
With HD DVD, missing DTS HD MA hurts a lot less because there aren't many discs with that format used, especially if you primarily buy US originated titles.

Right just for final clarification before i spend £500...If my system looks like this -
PS3-(via hdmi)-3300ES-(via hdmi)-40W2000
|
5.1 Speakers
I will be able too listen to the DOLBY TRUE HD soundtrack on (some) my Blu-Ray films?
and when they release a BD player cpable of DTS-HD MA decoding and my setup looks like this -
DTS-HD MA decoding BD player-(via hdmi)-3300ES-(via hdmi)-40W2000
|
5.1 Speakers
I will be able too listen to DTS-HD MA and DOLBY TRUE HD?
am i correct lol?
Sorry about all the questions!
