PS3 to decode DTS-MA?
Any chance that via a software update the PS3 would be able to decode DTS-MA and Dolby TruHD internally to PCM and output them to a receiver?

There's every chance, yes. Obviously it needs this functionality, and the sooner the better, I am sure Sony will make it happen.

Supposed to be before Christmas but looking unlikely now.

Re: PS3 to decode DTS-MA?
It is a shame we're still waiting considering how much Fox like DTS-HD MA.... a bitstream out option would be even better...

Re: PS3 to decode DTS-MA?
Bitstream is not going to happen, it's thought, owing to the chipset used for HDMI with the PS3. This is an optional feature of HDMI 1.3

Yep,MAW's right .................internal decoding only (DTS-HD MA) for the Ps3.

Re: PS3 to decode DTS-MA?
And TBH the 1.5Mbs DTS core on the few BR titles I've heard it on sounds pretty damn good too!!

No, that may not be true. The hdmi IC is a custom part number, only Sony and the chipmaker know what it is capable of.

Re: PS3 to decode DTS-MA?
The 9132 is a HDMI 1.2 chip, it doesn't support Bitstream.
The PS3 however, uses the 9133 which is a custom PS3 only part and its specs are not available publicaly.
The only Sony comments I've heard is that they would concentrate on internal decoding *first*.
SI claim the PS3 has all the functionality of their 9134, at least they talk about the PS3 in the launch release of the 9134.
Bottom line is that we do not know if it supports bitstream output and until we do there is no point speculating either way - the PS3 doesn't support bitstream output at present.

Re: PS3 to decode DTS-MA?
I do not believe it to be speculation, Peter. However, this is all perfectly in order as far as I'm concerned, it fulfils the BDA spec, and in this respect the other format spec too, and it's like that for good reasons. Some poor ones too, but for Mr Joe Public, internal decoding is the way to go anyway. DTS-MA can only be 1 or 2 firmare upgrades away, and they've been pretty regular about it, and added loads of other useful features, it will happen.
