PS3 to be firmware upgraded to profile v2.0o in 2008!

My sincere apologies if this has been posted before (couldn't find this specific quote).

I stumbled accross a paragraph tacked onto an article Web-enabled Blu-Ray titles from Lionsgate, Sony Pictures and Disney.

It said,

"Both Lionsgate and Sony Pictures fully expect the PS3 to become a Profile v2.0 BD-Live player via a firmware update sometime next year. A firmware update to give the PS3 a Profile v1.1 (PiP) upgrade is schedule for the end of this month"

We thank you for the information, but it would really be news if the PS3 was not going to be profile 2.0 in 2008, I'd have thought this was a no brainer. Commercial suicide for Sony if they don't achieve it.

Well up until now it was all just desire and speculation from PS3 owners, at least this new information allows some "informed speculation".

I guess so. Corel have announced the other 'no brainer' as well, windvd is to be made 1.1 compliant. Again, we knew they would, but that too is official. They say it will be the 1st real 1.1. I know Panasonic have 'claimed the honour' but they have no persistant storage. I believe PS3s and computers do have a little of this, so technically they will be 1st.

WinDVD was announced a few weeks ago but its not for sale until January is it?

The Panasonic fits the specifications for 1.1, that includes the memory requirements (256Mb persistent memory), so as it is in stock at Amazon, it should be classified as the first Bonus View player. It also has a SD memory slot for playback of AVCHD

It has no persistent storage till you put a SD card in it. However, it's passed the test, it is proclaimed compliant. Wouldn't be a problem to me as I have an SD card camera, I have dozens of them, but some might cry 'foul' over it, bloomin' cheapskates.

I understood that gen 1 HD DVD players only had [have] 32MB of persistent storage, so there can't be any great expectations for this kind of storage, i.e. in respect to HD material in any event. I thought the plan on those players when and if necessary was to add a USB drive or stick etc. Personally, I prefer the idea that the player could be sort of "expanded" rather than a piddly amount of memory that wouldn't store / retain diddly-squat.

It really shouldnt get the honour as its a bit of a cheat really It hasnt anymore processing power than any of the other non 1.1 players. So to be 1.1 compliant it drops hd audio decoding.

Surely it cant be that expensive to have 1.1/2.0 and hd audio decoding. I'm not happy that a player can be called 1.1 and not have hd audio, how much small print are people expected to read?

For me a 1.1 player should be delivered with the correct storage, however I have always been a fan of Pannys use of SD cards having a 'video' recorder, TV and portable DVD player, all of which can use them. So yes it is a great features (and talked about here ages ago by some of us ) but for me is still not 1.1 unless they ship with a card, cost probably less than 99p for the tiny sizes involved!!

They will need to tread carefully here though lest they leave the standalone market even further behind than they are now.

Well, I've never even heard of profile 2.0. I thought that profile 1.1 was the final profile.

Web features, ie ethernet, and extended attached storage. This will bring blu ray to full HD DVD parity. Apart from blu ray being so much better in every respect, and saving the planet on the way of course.

Profile 1.1---> 'Bonus View'
Profile 2.0----> 'BD Live'
