Help with a HD DVD Player

Hi all, first post so here goes..

Ive got a little Philips 20" LCD Screen for the bedroom, its ideal as it fits on our drawers.

I want to add a DVD Player that will upscale the normal DVDs to HD, and also play DivX films ive got on my PC.

The one ive found is the PHILIPS DVP5980 as id like a Philips one to match to TV.

The inputs on my TV are Scart, RGB, S Video and DVi.

I know to produce an upscaled picture i need to use the HDMi output from the player, but the screen doesnt have that input.

Can i use one of these - http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...C=SO&U=strat15

Will it produce a HD picture using that adapter to take the HDMi input into the TV via the DVi socket?

Any help appreciated

Russel

Re: Help with a HD DVD Player

You don't say whether your tv is HD Ready. As it doesn't have an HDMI input then it sounds like it isn't. If it is then it already upscales the picture to fit the screen. It is not very likely that an upscaling DVD player will do the job any better. Believe me I've got one and the effect is marginal on a 26" screen. On a 20" it would be undetectable. Upscaling DVD players do not magically turn normal DVD pictures to HD. They are a compromise situation that adds a few lines here and there. This picture will then be upscaled again by the tv (if it has a 720 screen). Quite often the result of this 2 stage process the effect is often worse, not better.

Re: Help with a HD DVD Player

DVI should give a better picture than the other inputs, but you need to be sure that the DVI input is HDCP compliant, otherwise it won't work. Check the TV specification to find this out.

Re: Help with a HD DVD Player

yes it says HD ready on the TV.

Am i best to use the Philips DVD player ive seen then, sounds like it could make the picture worse?

And of the 3 inputs (Scart, RGB, DVi) The DVi input with the HDMi adapter will be the best picture?

thanks again
