best dvd/hdef player, upscaling sd dvd at 1080p for£250

The last dvd player i bought was a sony 725, a very long time ago. reading the dvd and high def forums, i have yet to find enough info to help me buy the long over due replacment.

My current thinking with a budget of £250 is the Toshiba HD-EP35 with Silicon Optixs Reon chip. From what i have read this is a very good upscaler of sd dvd's, it seems to be a very good purchase. I would be taking sides on the hd war but the actual player not only plays hd dvd's but also seems to play dvd's better than most normal sd dvd players at the same price.

The only down side to the Toshiba HD-EP35 is the lack of resume playing, i know this wont work on a hd dvd not sure about sd.

Couple that with the fact that it only cost 250 from Amazon this would be a good buy.

Here comes the question, is there a sd dvd upscaler player that would give better picture a sonic performance than the Toshiba HD-EP35. I don't really mind if it's not a hd or blueray p[layer all im looking for is excellent dvd/upscaling 1080p playing ability with a good sound stage.

Anyone with this player or any advice on a a good buy would be greatly appreciated, this will be the xmas buy for our house so i'm keen to here from anyone and everyone on what you all think?

The EP35 doesn't use the reaon chip, it uses an Anchor bay chip. The Toshiba EX1 uses the Reon chip but it's costs around the £400 mark I think.

Damn looks like I've mixed up my reviews of upscaling tech thanks for the steer in the right direction. £400 is a bit high for me.

I'm still looking for a dvd sd upscaling player, picture quality, good black level's and outputs are foremost in my mind.

regards ray
