Oppo 981 with Sony KDL-46X3500

Hello there,
I have purchased a Sony KDL-46X3500 two weeks ago and I am thinking to upgrade my Oppo 971 and buy the Oppo 981 which does 1080p, my question is, will I see any improvement in the picture by sending a 1080p feed rather than a 1080i one that I am now using with the Oppo 971.
