Dolby True HD from PS3

I know the PS3 supports 1.3HDMI and i know my amp does but does the PS3 let you get the sound in Dolby True HD as i can get it to work.

Hi Robdog
The Ps3 can output TrueHD.
It decodes it internally and sends it to your amp via HDMI as LPCM.
Then you can have TrueHD blasting out of your speakers!

For Dolby True HD you have to change your PS3 to output "LPCM" via HDMI, for every other soundtrack format you can leave it as "Bitstream". I'm to knackered to go into specifics as to why but if you follow the rule above you won't go wrong

Re: Dolby True HD from PS3

The amp won't say Dolby Tru HD, it will just say LPCM or something. But you will be getting the full Dolby Tru HD soundtrack

Hi Robdog
Bring up the Ps3's onscreen menu,go to BD/DVD settings and select BD/DVD audio output format (HDMI) and make sure it's on LPCM.
Don't forget to select the audio track on the Blu-ray disc itself, aswell!

Re: Dolby True HD from PS3

Was wondering what was best myself, just got a PS3 and also have the Denon 2807 and mine says multi Ch in, as I have 7.1 It allows me to switch on the 2 xtra rear speakers to it then says multi ch in + PLx2 or something like that? make any sense?

You seem to be able to check when playing the spiderman film what audio rate you are getting, if I select the Dolby TrueHD track it flickers around but if I change the sound track to the LPCM alternative I think it seems to be fixed at a higher rate?

Is this right or am i not reading things correctly?

Mt PS3 is set to LPCM over hdmi by the way and not bitstream.

Re: Dolby True HD from PS3

I just tried my copy of 300 which i believe to be imported fomr the States and it doesn give me the option of DTHD even though it says thats what you can get on the back.

There is no main menu to choose it and it doesnt appear on the pop up menu.

Just tried my copy of spiderman 3 and i can either choose lpcm uncomressed or DDTHD. Like you said it doesnt show on the amp but when i press select on the PS3 controller it says it.

Is there any other way of checking im getting the proper HD sound?

Hi Robdog
The Ps3 can't send TrueHD bitsream (HDMI) to the receiver (HDMI 1.3) for it to decode,if it could and you had the right receiver it would show up as TrueHD.
That's why it shows up as MULTI-CH IN or LPCM,anyway were listening to TrueHD,so just enjoy.

Either the sound is being converted from what came off the disk to PCM in the amp or in the PS3.

With DolbyTrueHD it is being read off the disk by the PS3, converted from TrueHD to PCM and then sent down the HDMI cable as the multichannel audio.

Your amp doesn't light as Dolby TrueHD as by that time it isn't. It's several streams of converted audio that now just needs amplifying by the amplifier and sending to the speakers.

Alternatively the information could be read off the disk, not converted, sent down the HDMI cable and then it would be identified by the amp, light the TrueHD lamp, and is then converted to multichannel audio and sent to the speakers.

At present I don't think the PS3 can do the latter.

Re: Dolby True HD from PS3

Ok thanks for that.

This is a little opff topic but ive just found out my TV may not support HDMI 1.3 would this affect my ability to get DolbyTHD?

I may have to phone Toshiba to confirm if it does or doesnt support 1.3.
