Does the PS3 upscale to 1080P?

Does the PS3 standard dvd's to 1080 - I have read a few threads & some say it does and others don't????

Hi by the sea
You have to go into the Ps3 onscreen menu and click on updates and that will tell you if it needs updating.
You need a broadband connection and the Ps3 can go online and update via wireless connection.
Adds new features and fixes bugs.

FW = firmware.. Software which is written to EPROM ( a form of memory which can be written to) which contains the core of software which controls hardware
AS such any hardware whose firmware can be upgraded to better levels of functionally get firmware upgrades which don't ship with the hardware originally but latter version may have them

I for some reason cant get mine to upscale to 1080p, Blueray's play perfectly at 1080/24 but when i try a DVD it plays at 1080i.
Ive tried all the DVD upscaling options to no avail, if i go into Video settings>Video output settings and choose Automatic it says "Maximum resolution 1080p but if I choose Custom and tick 1080p the screen just goes blank for 30 seconds .
Ive played around with it but for some reason i cant get it to upscale to 1080p .
BTW im running the latest firmware with the PS3 connected via HDMI (obviously) to a Pioneer 436xde ...can anyone help

I use to have the Pioneer 506XDE and that's what it did with me also!
You can't upscale to 1080p with SD dvd because the TV does not have the full resollution 1920x1080.
But Blu-ray will play just fine at 1080p/24 as your panel downscales the 1080p siganl to match your TV's native resolution.

I know the Pioneer isnt a 1080 screen but why doesnt it just downscale an upscaled 1080p SD DVD image in the same way it does a Blueray image ?
The screen is capable of receiving a 1080p image it just doesnt make sense why it will do it with Blueray and not upscaled DVD ?
Ive got a Denon 1920 that can only do 1080i so Ive go no other 1080p source but if I connected a newer upscaling DVD player, say a Denon 1940 would that not allow me to upscale to 1080p either ?
I just cant see how the TV can differentiate between 1080p from Blueray and 1080p from upscaled DVD, saying that is it the TV thats doing it or is it the PS3 ? ....confused

I know what you mean mate................it use to do it on my 506XDE,Blu-ray fine but (like you say) 1080p no go with upscaled dvd.
Maybe were missing something!
I'll tell you what though,i bet it wouldn't make any difference anyway.

I bet your right it probably wouldn't make any difference .
Its just that I know the PS3 is meant to do it and cant see any reason why it wont do it on my Pioneer Plasma, its some thing I keep going back to every couple of weeks to see if Ive done some thing wrong and just get frustrated with my self and the PS3 because I cant get it to work ...even if it probably wouldn't make any difference....i just want to see it do it

The reason for this is simple. Mainly because people are using the term 1080p generically.
Pioneer screens will accept a 1080/24p signal.
Upscaling of SD produces a 1080/60p signal which the Pioneer doesnt accept.

My Pioneer accepts 1080i/60 and 1080p/60 signals.
