Newbie Region Question

Hi,

A colleague has been asked to source a DVD which is UK/European for a family member who lives in the USA.

What is the best method of ensuring that his family member can view the DVD?

i.e. I know many UK/European players can either be hacked or have been modified to be multi region, is the reverse true for players in the USA?

Would it be best to somehow rip and burn the DVD into a PC-readable format e.g. MPEG or something ?

Any advice would be appreciated, not wanting to do anything 'dodgy' just to achieve the desired result.

Kind Regards,

Paul

Re: Newbie Region Question

It's not just an issue of region coding, for US people, it's an issue of TV standards. Namely NTSC over there and PAL here. Unless they have a TV and a DVD player that can output/accept PAL, then being region free won't matter as they won't be able to watch it.

Re: Newbie Region Question

Tell your US friends to buy one of those cheap DVD players that actually converts PAL to NTSC. Time to start investigating which ones do it.

Re: Newbie Region Question

Is ripping to PC not an option? Buying a dvd player for one dvd sounds like hard work.

Re: Newbie Region Question

Rip to a PC, say an MPEG file or something, then burn that as a data file to a DVD ? He could then watch on a PC out there?

Re: Newbie Region Question

Well he could watch the normal DVD on his PC if he got the 'Any DVD' software. That would save the bother of ripping.
