Hi guys,
I bought a new upscaling dvd player recently as I had a bought a HDTV but have to say I'm not exactly blown away by the picture.

I'd have to say it looks "really" damn grainy in places especially in the background of scenes. I've messed around with the settings in the thread for my tv and changed the dvd hd mode but I have to missing 'something'.

XBOX 360 looks awesome and tv looks okay as it's standard feed so I'm not that arsed about that.

DVD player is the hd870 by Samsung and the Samsung. Using an HDMI connection.

My previous TV was a CRT Philips Pixel Plus 2 and the picture was bloody amazing so maybe my expectations are too high.

You could try a different HDMI. I had a similar problem in that the picture looked too grainy. Tried a different HDMi cable and it looked perfect and not grainy. It seems not all HDMI are created equal after all.

Hmm, sounds quite weird. Maybe the sharpness is up too high in the TV settings - sometimes that can cause grain. The biggest cause for grain on my samsung tv in certain movies was using the 'dynamic' setting.

was the HDMI cable I purchased. Should be a pretty good one I'd have thought? I'll try and get another cable in the meantime.

Upscaling SD is like blowing up a photograph,in real terms the picture quality can only get worse,A good machine with a good transfer can initially seem to be better but when scrutinised native 576 will usually look better.
Even the best machines like Denon and Arcam are generally preferable on native settings to upscaled-they are still light years behind genuine HD material on Hd sources.

That'll be why when films like Star Wars and Indiana Jones are upscaled they look awesome compared to other dvd's because their video bitrate is 9.8mb.

Agreed,

All the re-mastered Star wars,LOTR,Kong look excellent upscaled and show what a good transfer is capable of,however a quick comparison of say Kong sd versus hd quickly shows up the limitations of sd.
