Do people use Upscaled SD DVD on non Full HD 768 screens? Do we need it?

Over the last 2.5 weeks, I've been messing and fiddling with settings and last week came to the conclusion that the processing on my JVC D-ILA 56" is better than on the SD DVD Player (Samsung 1080P7).

If I set the DVD player to 720P, the image is slightly darker and "just not right". Set to 1080 and it looks very smooth and sweet and nice and bright, but, you do lose a little detail in faces etc... just looks ever so slightly washed out. It loses sharpness...

Now, obviously, my TV is 1368x768 (which doesn't match andthing 1:1) and this means that no matter what I shove into it, they'll be scalling and processing going on with upto two scales (1080 in the DVD back down to 768 in the TV etc).

However, I just love the picture on DVD sent as 576P and let the TV do the scaling. Yes, I get ever so slight jaggies now and then, but the detail level is so much nicer and the picture as a whole.., infact with certain discs, The Time Machine, Driven which look I have to say, amazing in places, and great overall (my benchmark DVD's as daft as it sounds)...

Just wondered what others set there TV's SD DVD's to? Also, give the screen res's, you use etc... I'd be interested to know.

This is a never ending story and - believe it or not - one of the most frequent questions

Personally I think it should be provided as template by the mods. You click onto an icon and here your go again. No need to type it in.

Maybe we should have a subforum on this topic?

No offence here. I am only amused

Sumvision Phoenix does 1360x768.

You should also check the HDMI port(s) supports 1360x768. My Samsung R88 only supports that on 1 out of 3 HDMI ports.

For that price you get a decent full HD panel and a HD-DVD player

The settings on the Arcam machines are great, unfortunatly this does not work on most pdp panels (under 50") due to them being 1024x768,irrespective of that most SD material should look best at 576,depending on the quality of scalers in your machine/panel.

Quite right on both accounts, worth mentioning imho.
