DVD Upscaling - Does it require a HDMI/Component connection?

As per the title I've just bought a new 40" Sony X2000 and currently have my DVD player connected via SCART (which is the only output on it as it's an older model). Got 2 main questions really :-

1)Would I see a big improvement over this in picture quality if I bought a newer 'upscaling' DVD player?

2) I'm guessing a newer 'upscaling' DVD player would need to be connected via a component or HDMI lead in order to upscale to the 1080i/p resolution of my TV? Am I correct in this assumption?

TIA

Answers

1) Possibly you might see some improvement but don't bet on it, your screen is doing the scaling anyway and you are only going to seen an improvement if the upscaling done by the external device (dvd player, video processor etc) is better than that in the display. Consider a £50-£100 dvd player is going to have a scaler of a quality relative to its price while your display ~£1000 or more will have a scaler which the manufacturer if they are any good will have optimised specifically for it. Dedicated standalone video processor/scalars can run at £1000-3000 and upwards.

2) yes to send an upscaled or high def feed will require either a component, dvi or hdmi connection

moving from scart to component or hdmi output with a progressive scan dvd player should provide a half decent upgrade. you don't necesarily need one with upscaling, as your tv will do that, but most players on the market these days offer upscaling, usually via hdmi output.
