Hi...
I have a 696 player and i have connected with a Panasonic pt ax100 via HDMI and with a Samsung LCD tv via component.
When i watch at 576 its ok but when i use upscale 720 or 1080 the picture looks vertical smaller (squeezed) with small black borders (up and down)

have you checked you have set the dvd player to widescreen?

on my 696 connected to my pio plasma, when output as upscalled, i need to keep switching the tv from "wide" to "full" when i turn the player on. you might need to press the aspect ration button on your tv to correct this
