Recently got a Sony DVPNS405 Player which i thought was region locked.

When i got it home I though "what the hell" and tried a Region 1 disk "Jackass - Vol2" and it worked fine. Excellent, I thought, it must be region free.

I then thought I'd try another Region1 disk - "Moulin Rouge", but the player then said it couldn't play that disk as it was Region 1.

Why would one region 1 disk work and the other wouldn't???

It's possible your jackass region 1 disc is authored like the DTS version of Dante's Peak. The case cover says R1 and there's nothing to suggest it's any different from any other R1 disc but it is in fact coded R1 AND R2. If you put the disc in an R2 player it plays fine but you get Japanese subtitles that cant be switched off!
Obviously its so the same disc (but with different packing) can be sold in Japan. If it's the MTV disc you're talking about this may well be the case.

Moulin Rouge is obviously a different story with R1 only coding.

If your player is unmodified this is almost certainly the reason.
