Re: New Oppo 980H

I play mine via coaxial optical to a receiver, which does the decoding. Sound is quite good.

However the first second of sound is cut off when you start playing or resume from pause. This goes for the sound from both DVDs and CDs.

Pretty horrific that someone could release a "high-end" DVD player that does this. Even if you argue that it is not meant to be a mainstay CD player, I find this defect to be really noticeable and annoying , especially when you have a film on pause and return to watching.

Firmware on the player up to date?

Re: New Oppo 980H

Has anybody got any experience hooking this player upto a 768p pio display. What is this player's p.q like when set at 480i/576i then letting the display do the deinterlacing compared with the 983 set at 480p/576p doing the same. Does the 980's interlaced settings make much of a difference compared to the 983's progressive output when it comes to p.q? Trying to convince the wife that converting the loft into a cinema room is a good idea If I eventually get around to it my 983 might get promoted to the new Shangri la and may get the 980 for use in the lounge.

Hi mate.
I have seen the 980 @ 576i to the 42" Pioneer it's good as the TV's deinterlacing is fine but to me anyway setting the Oppo to 576p gave the better overall picture.
All the best.

I have mine set to 576p, also.
If I set it to 'auto' it always goes to 1080i.
Why is this?

I have a Panasonic TH-37PV500B - 1024 x 720.
Would the 1080i be a better setting than 576p?

You've got to see what you prefer i guess 576p though and the Oppo is doing "all" the deinterlacing.

Re: New Oppo 980H

Hello all from the land of OZ,
As we use PAL format on our dvds. I have just read through 33 pages.
Very impressed with the Oppo 980. Am looking at finding out a little info.

Have all the issues been solved via Beta or official release firmware ?
What are the lastes firmwares for USA and EUR?

One last confusing thing:
Are the firmware releases not same and it should not matter which one you load up as it comes from the one place, or have i got it all wrong. They have just labled them differantly when sending out to EUR or USA websites... Has anyone had confirmation from Oppo about this.

If not what is outstanding and should i buy from the USA or EUR ?.

i await your replies...

Re: New Oppo 980H

As I understand it the Us firmware and the EU firmware are pretty much the same in functional terms but the US firmware defaults to NTSC settings and the European version defaults to a PAL setup. However either firmware can be changed in setup to suit either the NTSC or PAL environment. The unit can also be made mutli-region. The US version firmware will cause the SCART output to not work as far as I know, since the US doesnt use SCART. Dunno if that is imprtant or not for you. I loaded each succesive release from both US and Europe and all worked fine in PAL land for me.

jerrymac,

Thanks for talking the time and replying.
Scart is not important to me at all.
I am a little confused by your comment, also please excuse my ignorance as well:

"The US firmware defaults to NTSC settings and the European version defaults to a PAL setup"

"However either firmware can be changed in setup to suit either the NTSC or PAL environment"

Is it an option that you can change to make it PAL setup ?

Or are you talking about the TV Type option, where you can pick PAL , NTSC or AUTO.

I have downloaded the 980 manual and that is the only thing i can see that may refer to your reply, unless i missed something.

many thanks in advance...

Re: New Oppo 980H

Well If I remember correctly the US version defaults to an NTSC TV and output resolution of 480i.
The European version defaults to 576i output and a PAL TV. However the can obviously be changed in the setup screens.

Anything I've read from other users leads me to believe that other than that they are functionally identical.

Re: New Oppo 980H

Just placed an order with Amazon uk for £157.00 delivered. I hope it makes my region 1 collection look good again after all these blu rays. It was a close call between this and the Tosh. Hope I made the right choice as I'm watching all my pal region two's through my Sony bdps500 and they look ok, fingers crossed.

Will it come unlocked to play region 1???

Thanks

Re: New Oppo 980H

Here's something interesting and it's contect shocked me if I am honest, in the past I had one of the older Oppo players, can't remember the model but they were always great with their service, however today I ordered the 980h but asked whether it was in fact the right choice, here's the response:

Andy,

For PAL performance, you will not want to purchase the DV-980H. This player does not support hardware de-interlacing and scaling of PAL 2:2 Cadence. This means that the resulting image may have interlacing or aliasing artifacts. Something like the DV-981HD (Faroudja DCDi) or the DV-983H (ABT VRS) will greatly enhance your PAL DVDs.

You may be interested in the BDP-83, as this player will support proper PAL decoding, while actually playing back Blu-ray films.

CRTProjectors.co.uk is selling modified BDP-83 players which can be made region free, but these players are not supported by OPPO Digital, Inc.

Subject: Product Advice

Hello,

I have just ordered the DV-980H for use with my 46" Samsung A Series LCD and although I have a PS3 and also a Toshiba HD-E1, I have never been truely happy with their performance with standard definition DVD's and I have an extensive collection, I was wondering whether you think I have made the right decision, it was a toss up with the 983 which was a bit out of my price range but based on what I have read, it seems that people are saying that the 983 will really only benefit people who use large displays such as the projector market?

I am curious as to your opinion, also I have ordered this from OppoShop, will it have the very latest firmware on board?

Best regards,

Andy

Is this just blatant product bashing?

The last firmware update certainly says it allows 2:2 cadence detection now and this was done with the help of someone at DVDTimes, so what do they mean by "it won't do 2:2"

Re: New Oppo 980H

That someone was me, although I'm obviously at AVForums now and not DVDTimes

The 980 DOES detect and compensate for 2:2 cadence on PAL discs. And, because I requested they add the feature, if it doesn't detect it, you can force it. However, my collaboration in getting this to work was with Oppo Europe. Perhaps Oppo US are just not aware of it, even although their firmware has the feature (last time I checked).

The 983 still covers more bases, though. For example, with the 980, 2:2 detection doesn't work for 4:3 PAL DVDs (weird, I know).

Thanks for the reply David, small world isn't it, your article on DVD Times was one of the reasons I went for it, well that and I didn't want to take a chance on suffering the Faroudja macroblocking issue like I did with the Oppo I owned a couple of years back.

It just surprised me that they would jump to recommending the BDP-83, I work in sales for a well known telecoms firm and I know how things work in that world and it just stunk of product bashing, as I say it's not an attitude I am used to getting from Oppo.

As for 4:3 content, the only dvd's I own in this ratio is the first season of Airwolf

From everything I have read, I am looking forward to getting the 980, as I said, it's purely to get the most out of my SD collection and I read on here somewhere that Oppo told someone who asked them that they would only get the best out of the 983 in a very large screen setup, also, your writeup seems to confirm this.

Thanks for the reply guys

It's pretty baffling, what sometimes happens is that the film will play properly for a second or two, but then the player will stop deinterlacing completely, so everything is shown with combing. I can only assume it's some conflict with the different scaling needed.

I've bought both my DV-980H & DV-983H from them as well as HDMI cables etc all at different times and found them to be very speedy. Usually received an email acknowledging purchase and a tracking number when it shipped.

Re: New Oppo 980H

Ordered sunday, received today and what a nice machine. Put a few of my fav movies through there paces that I don't own on blu ray and to be honest will now not bother double dipping. Really pleased with the image and sound and would advise anyone with a large dvd collection to jump in. Great deal from amazon for £157.00 delivered. Happy days.

I can now watch Contact and Aliens again.

Re: New Oppo 980H

Bought the 980 last August for £145 through Amazon. Arrived in about 4/5 working days,

Use it extensively for DVD's/CD's about 50/50 and find it superb for both.

Excellent product.

Thinking of buying a 2nd one as they went up to £169 now back to £149.

Far better than a friends Pioneer - can't remember exact model 600/610 I think.

Cheers

Re: New Oppo 980H

I assume old Tv shows on this are fine as they were made interlaced in the first place, all my BBC clasics look fine, but again they are native 576i anyway?

Perhaps that Pioneer DVD player wasn't calibrated correctly?

For a while, BBC used video cameras indoors and film cameras outside. The film scenes won't look as amazing as they would on a more expensive machine, but I doubt that'll harm them much given the age of the transfer.

Are there really people who troll these forums looking to defend a product they own themselves?

Seriously why would you bother, it'd be like me going into the Sony owners thread and saying my this or that it better than theirs...........

Anyway, I received my 980 today, it's been delivered to work and I am still there so I can't give my impressions on it but I am looking forward to firing it up and seeing how it treats stuff like LOTR and Star Wars, plus there's my R1 Pure Adrenaline Edition of Point Break which I haven't been able to watch in ages

Re: New Oppo 980H

Okay I have been reading the setup manual for the 980 and I need some help with the Video / Audio configuration.

Firstly there is this which I have lifted straight from the manual:

7. Color Space: To select the color space for the HDMI output. The available options are:
• RGB 4:4:4 – The HDMI output uses RGB color space.
• YCbCr 4:4:4 – The HDMI output uses YCbCr 4:4:4 color space. If you select this option
please make sure that your TV is configured to accept YCbCr 4:4:4 signals, otherwise the
video color will be incorrect.
• YCbCr 4:2:2 – The HDMI output uses YCbCr 4:2:2 color space. If you select this option
please make sure that your TV is configured to accept YCbCr 4:2:2 signals, otherwise the
video color will be incorrect.

Which should i choose for my Samsung LE46A656?

Secondly, I will be using HDMI for Video / Audio into my Onkyo TX-SR507 and the manual says to set the speaker sizes to large, now my speakers are Tannoy SFX5.1 satellites and the amp specifies them as small so should I not be setting the 980 to small

Also, do I have to input the speaker distances, again the manual makes it look like this is the case but the amp also handles this, any ideas

Looking forward to your help guys
