Denon 1930 - help wanted

I had a Sony DVP-NS930 which I was very happy with but which gave up the ghost. It was connected to a Sony receiver with a decent IXOS s-video cable. The receiver connects to my old school CRT telly with another decent IXOS cable, s-video to scart.

Replaced player with a Denon 1930, which allegedly gives a great picture, and on a straight swap basis the picture from the s-video out is poor. To eliminate the possibility of the receiver being the problem I took it out of the loop and connected DVD straight to the telly with the s-video to scart but it made no difference.

Thought maybe I need to change some setting or other but I can't see anything in the setup pages or in the manual that would put this straight. The manual suggests that the s-video picture ought to be better than scart to scart. I don't find that to be the case, especially puzzling when you consider that the scart-scart lead I have tried it with is a cheapo plastic no-name.

Anyone got any suggestions? Is the 'great picture' from this box reserved for HDMI/component users?

In all fairness...
why buy such a great player if you are planning to utilise the s-vid connection for your TV? seems like alot of money to me???
I would guess that maybe its your choice of connection that is impairing the PQ?
Just a guess mind you.

What about investing (I mean £30/£40) on a good scart (QED); that may pay divedends?

Re: Denon 1930 - help wanted

Mmmm...

Some things haven't changed here... the tv, the cables, the amp... the only variable is the player. I have swapped a Sony for a Denon and the PQ has gone down the toilet. Now loads of people say how good this Denon is for PQ but I'm not seeing it so is it:

1) that 'loads of people' are wrong, or
2) that the excellent PQ is for HDMI users only, and that support for legacy outputs is poor, or
3) I'm missing something from the setup menu?

I'm not afraid of spending money on decent cables that I'm going to use, the two IXOS leads I have been using are both decent quality. But I always thought s-video was better than scart, the Sony gave a better picture from s-video than scart, and that's what the Denon manual says as well. So I'm reluctant to spend £30 on a scart lead on the off chance of a better picture.

I'm going to get a decent telly soon enough (six months, a year) and then I will use the component connection (at least that is what the manual says is the best). In the meantime I am curious to know why this allegedly great player looks so very bad in the space formerly occupied by a 5 year old Sony.

Try this. Using your remote, push the mode button, which accesses several video adjustments. One of them is a black level enhancer which, by default, is turned on. Turn it off. You will notice much richer colors when it is off and an overall washed-out look when it's on. It's a mystery why Denon has this black level thing turned on by default as I have heard of no one who likes the effect if creates. Hope this helps.
