Evening All,

My DVD recorder has died. I think it is probably a blown power supply, as I've replaced the fuse, and am getting absolutely nothing at all on it. no lights, no fan, nothing.

I have considered getting it repaired, but:

1. I'd have to find somewhere to take it, then wait at least a week.
2. I've not recorded anything on it since getting Sky+ (and now a Humax 9200 on Freeview).
3. The menu system was always pretty crappy on it at the best of times!

So I'm now thinking with the way prices have plunged, I will probably be better off just getting a basic player instead?

Needless to say, I'm after a decent picture quality, plus optical audio and component video to feed into my Yamaha A/V amp.

It will be feeding into a Toshiba 32ZP38 CRT, so no need for upscaling.

What would people recommend?

I would have to say, try the Pioneer DV600 it has all the conections you are after and it can made Multi Region with the hand set.

The best thing is that you can upscale by HDMI so it's there if you upgrade your screen in the future.

My screen is the Sammy LE40M86 and the Pioneer produces stunning pictures on this screen, even though it a 1080p screen i find the best picture from the pioneer is produced when its HDMI Rez is set to 480p, the screen is scaleing better than the player.

However, give it a try. For £165, ish you might be suprised.

Mr Quint, are you sure about the hand set hack? If so, could you point me to a site that describes it? I'm thinking about getting the DV600, and my googling has only turned up hacks that require an IR-capable laptop or programmable all-in-one remote. Not that I can't make do with that, but if I knew it would be even easier, .
